How much do you, honestly, spend on food?

Just as the title really, and how many of you there are?

We are 6 - 2 adults, two pre-teens and two toddlers. We're now hovering around £100 a week on food. This also includes toiletries, loo roll, cleaning/laundry supplies. Nappies/pet food separate. We only have guinea pigs so they're not overly expensive anyway.

A few years ago, when we only had two children I could easily feed all four of us on £40 a week! Is £100 reasonable? Do you spend more or less? If less - how?!

(Please don't say Aldi, I hate Aldi and they never have what I want so I end up spending even more)!

We're much the same as you, £100 pw, 3 adults, sometimes 4 if DS's Girlfriend eats here, 2 children (6 & 11). Trying to cut down by making meal plans and sticking to it. Have changed to home bargains for biscuits, crisps, cleaning products & toiletries but theres still lots of room for improvement.

AnOddOod · 19/08/2015 07:29

Are you me? Same number of people + GPs Grin
We spend about £100. Think children getting bigger (portions bigger) combined with food prices increasing massively is what's doing it.
I find the local market cheaper than supermarkets/Aldi etc and buy in bulk.

TantrumsAndBalloons · 19/08/2015 07:34

5 of us, 2 adults, 2 teenagers and 1 11 year old.
We spend about £150-£175 per week on food. This also includes dog/cat food and packed lunches for 5 people

ToTheStarsMorag · 19/08/2015 07:46

6 here, 2 adults and 4 DCs, oldest is 8. We spend far too much, probably about £150 -£200. That will include nappys (but they are only £9 for about 70).

I think a lot of that is emergency food though as I don't really get time to meal plan.

During the holidays I rely on Ocado a lot which won't help keep my bill down, I cannot imagine taking 4 under 8's into lidil but perhaps I should just get there as it opens and give it a go!

FernsNotAHappyGully · 19/08/2015 07:59

We are 6. 2 adults, 4 children aged 3-8 and 2 cats.

I can spend about £70-£80 a week on everything if I'm super dooper careful and go to Aldi, which is walking distance from our house so would be daft not to go there.

At Asda, we can spend about £100-£120 a week.

NotSoDesperateHousewife · 19/08/2015 10:51

Oh no, I never, ever even dream of taking them all IN to a supermarket. The thought alone makes me weep Grin

We use Tesco, generally, usually click and collect, then we also get club card points (and extra ones because we're with Eon energy) and fuel save helps.

I'm beginning to think that £100pw might be ok. Step Change suggests £570 a month Shock

We are 2 adults and3 children 4-8 and spend about £100 a week. We never eat out and every couple of weeks we have a free takeaway from work (Indian resturant, I take a meal home after work an freeze some if I don't eat it
Dh gets free lunch at work

MazyCrummy · 20/08/2015 10:30

We are two adults, two pre teens, two children and a selection of animals. During term time, about £200/wk but it's costing about £20-30/wk extra with the children all home for lunch.

lavent · 22/08/2015 18:55

1 adult 3 DC & baby
£60/ week including formula & nappies/wipes for 2.
£40 if just counting food

Suzietwo · 24/08/2015 14:07

we are 5 (2 adults, 1,3 and 5 year old) and spend around £800-1,000 pcm. both adults are at home more or less full time and we have a nanny two days a week (who feeds the kids copious amounts of fruit). we dont go out to eat but cater for a lot of people most weekends.

Ripeningapples · 24/08/2015 14:13

With the higher end here with 4 adults (DC 20 and 17). Am truly grateful I can buy for want and not for need but having said that I don't think we are overly extravagant.

notaprincessbutaqueen · 27/08/2015 10:36

2 adults and 3 dc's - 11, 6 and 3, and a dsd, spend about £70 a week.

onlyoranges · 27/08/2015 19:45

Think the older they get the more expensive it gets! I am cooking for 6 adults 21, 19, 14, 13 (teens adults portions, these boys and their forever empty tums) then there is my dh and I and a 6 yr old. I can't do a weekly shop or it would just all be eaten so do it in parts and that way I kid myself how little I am spending!!

SocksRock · 27/08/2015 19:48

2 adults, 3 children. We meal plan and shop at morrisons. About £100 per week including £10 for DD1 to have school meals. That includes all meals including packed lunch for DH - me plus smallest just snack at lunchtime at home.

YeOldeTrout · 27/08/2015 20:11

2 adults, 2 teens, 2 primary age, most of us greedy pigs.
No idea, honestly. Within what we can afford. We waste very little and eat a lot of veg.

This week I seem to have spent £400 on shopping Shock

We have been away for 3 weeks and I ran everything pretty low before we went, so there was a lot of store cupboard and freezer stuff. I've batch booked 5x meat sauce with 2kg of mince and a bit of other bulk meat. Brought new plastic stuff for packed lunches and lots of alcohol as we are having friends from abroad stay this weekend. 4 dcs home on holiday. And Pyrex and some Rice melamine storage bowls were on sale at ocado so that is included. £200 on ocado and £170 at sainsburys and some small bits and bobs on the way.

I usually spend between £100-120 so this feels overwhelming, and I can account for it with the alcohol and non-grocery items, and restocking after holidays, but it does sort of average out to increase my weekly shopping more than I would normally account for Hmm must stop buying non-grocery related items

GlitzAndGigglesx · 28/08/2015 09:57

I did an Asda shop nearly 2 weeks ago and spent £120 for 5 of us - 2 adults, 4yo and month old twins. That didn't include nappies or cleaning products. I've probably spent an extra £30 on formula, top up shops and nappies since. We probably spend close to £300 a month now with nappies and formula included. When it was 3 of us we spent around £200 a month including toiletries, cleaning products and top up shops

lalamumto3 · 28/08/2015 10:03

Imip, we are the same this week, we are still restocking freezer and cupboards after running them down before we went away. I have spent £80 at butchers Thursday, ocado £80 Thursday, Waitrose £60 Saturday, Ocado £80 Tuesday, Waitrose £55. So £355 in a week !

It did include toiletries, house cleaning stuff, loo rolls etc and £20 in multivits that made dd1 vomit within 20 mins :), may take them back!!!!!

I also keep popping bits and pieces in for dd1 who is off to UNI, hence vitamins and other bits and pieces. I also took dd2 with me shopping yesterday she added cheese strings £3 and cupcake decorations !!!!

I am planning to investigate Aldi when children go back to school and normality starts again.

We are very lucky that we can afford it, but it really dies seem a little excessive

lalamumto3 · 28/08/2015 10:05

By the way there are 5 of us, 3 adults and 2 teenagers one of whom is perpetually hungry

imip · 28/08/2015 10:56

Glad I'm not the only one lala!

Crunchyleaves · 28/08/2015 11:42

We're a family of 7, 5dc between 12-4 and four of them are boys who don't stop eating. I spend roughly £200 a week in tesco and farm shop. I meal plan, don't buy anything particularly interesting but just can't get it any lower.

We are a family of 6. DC's 2,5,7,10. I spent about £150 last week (includes toiletries and cleaning products) but this week I have spent around £80. I do my main shop at Lidl and then any extras from Morrisons. I meal plan and we don't have expensive meat - mince, bacon, sausages, pork shoulder and chicken. I also cook from scratch every night which can be a pain but I don't really know any different.

Trurouge · 28/08/2015 22:32

There's 6 of us, soon to be seven. 2 adults and kids between 14 and 3. Up to a few months ago we could spend anywhere between £150 and £200 a week on shopping then I tried Aldi (I know it's not everyone's cup of tea) our shopping bill has halved. I spend no more than £80 per week now and have to say the products are surprisingly good.
