Is three children a large family in the UK?

I'm looking at this topic and am surprised by how many posts are about having three children, or even people with 2 considering having a third. Is three seen as particularly large in the UK? I wouldn't have considered any less than four as being slightly large, and would really have expected most posts to be about 5+ children.

Just curious, no judgement.

I'm one of three and grew up with families the same, some with 4 in London. I'd say 5+ is large. By summer I'll have 3 would love more but have to see how finances go!

I have many friends with 3 - but through multiples rather than 3 pregnancies
At 3 cars and houses become more complex which is why most seem to consider 'large' because it has a physical impact on things

I'd say 5+ is large. I know a lot of people with 4+ and as a mother of 8 it's just normal to me to see lots of kids. Having said that, my kids best friends are all mostly the only child or one of two.

I have three and I'm always being told I've got a brood lol. I personally consider a large family to be one were the parents have 4+ children.

I have three & don't think I have a large family. Most people in my circle have three, and four is not unusual. I consider a large family to be 5 or more children.

I don't think it's considered large - we have 3 and know quite a few families with 3

I'm in London and out of all the families I can think of perhaps one in ten has three children. None with more.

Hulababy · 02/04/2015 19:08

I wouldn't say three was a large family, but reckon it is more than average.

Most people we know have 2. We have 1. I am one of three though.

I have 3 and in our circle there are two other couples with 3, the rest all have 2. It definitely feels large to me!

hollyisalovelyname · 05/04/2015 16:53

3 is normal in Ireland. Often 4.

Strokethefurrywall · 05/04/2015 16:54

I'm one of three and would love a third - I don't consider it to be large, 5+ is large to me.
That said, I'm not sure I'd venture down the route of a third given that we live overseas and the cost of college education in the US is extortionate, as would flying them back and forth to uni in the UK. Wouldn't hesitate otherwise, 3 is the magic number for me!

I have three and in my neighbourhood (in London) three is only slightly less common than 2. Thinking of my original NCT group, 4 couple stopped at 2, 3 couples had 3. Thinking of DC1's best friends in her non religious primary: 1 is from a 4 child family, 2 are from a 3 and 1 is from a 2 child family.

I didn't think we were a large family with 3, I know lots of 3's. I Do now consider us a large family with 5 and find far too many people ask me if they're all mine

Stitchintime1 · 10/04/2015 21:45

I think four is where I would start the idea of large.

CheeseandGherkins · 13/04/2015 15:15

3 seems pretty usual to me, definitely not a large family.

CloserToFiftyThanTwenty · 13/04/2015 15:18

I think it's starting to get large - not enough to raise an eyebrow, but bigger than usual
