Best bunk beds for bigger DC's

I am looking to buy bunk beds for the DC's, I could do with buying once and (if the past is anything to go by) bunk in with them occasionally if they are very ill so I'm looking for bunks that will last until the leave home if they need too.

I would like to get some with a big gap in-between the two bunks so they can sit up even when they are bigger.

I have seen metal ones that look sturdy but I'm worried the bedroom will look like a hostel, my budget is not massive though, so they look like good value.

What do you have and where to do buy yours from? Do you have any tips for advice that will help?...thank you in advance.

My 2 boys have these got them when they were only 3&4 and now they are 8&9. We have even slept granddad in them when he has visited. They are full size and have a pretty good distance between the bunks for sitting up, only down side being that because of the big space between the bunks the top bunk is closer to the ceiling so oldest DS bangs his head :(

just noticed your comment about budget sorry they are a little more than the metal ones but must say ours have moved house 4 times now and they are still really sturdy, if you are not expecting to move house lots (we do due to DHs job) then I bet they would last a very long time, probably until they leave home and onto grandchildren :)

These people seem to be very good value for money and will do made to measure at an affordable costs IYSWIM

I would get them to make the lowest bunk very low indeed to give them maximum headroom each.

Worth getting pull out storage for underneath if you're short on storage space.

Thank you, both links are really helpful, the ikea ones are do-able. Good point about the top bunk height, we have lower ceilings than average and eventually two DS's would be sharing (wise to bare these things in mind for future)...on that basis made to measure from Dorset is definitely worth looking into too.

We have the cheaper Mydal bunk bed frame from ikea. It can't be split into singles but is very good for low ceilings (modern house here) and ds1 is 11 and still seems fine in the bottom bunk. I have tried out the top bunk before now and it seemed fine.
