Lol it was just a question sent out there really. We are always thinking of just one more (no. 5) but wonder if time is slipping away ....... just after people's thoughts on the subject.

AGE is only a number and doesnt matter as much if you are fit and healthy .
IMO its better for a child to have a healthy 48 yr old mum , than an unfit ,unhealthy 28 yr old mum. iykwim?

My cousin had a first baby at 49 after trying for years. I am pleased for her.

I had my fourth at 39. A mum I know had a baby at 44.

Some may say its too old but it a personal thing.

How old are you slippers?

I am 38 in a couple of months and am also weighing up having another (DC5)

kingfix · 16/08/2010 12:09

are you me, slippers? I would love to have a third, but at 37 fear I won't have the energy to(a) deal with the lack of sleep over the next few years and (b)ride out the emotional teenage years with patience.
Plus I look at my parents' and PIL's retirements (grown up children, disposable income, lots of travel) and think I'd like that for us too.

As the sibling of someone with learning disabilites that may not have been helped by my mums age... I would say keep that thought in the back of your mind. Would you mind if you had a child and with increased risks etc he/she never moved out, couldnt function independantly, in nappies as an adult etc etc

You never know. Jut putting that out there that statistically your baby may not be as healthy as if you were 10 years younger. If that doesnt bother you then obviously dont worry!

PosieParker · 17/08/2010 13:42

I saw a pic of Kelly Preston and thought 47 is rather old.

MUM2BLESS · 17/08/2010 18:42

Tuggy do you mind asking how old was your mum?

tuggy · 18/08/2010 16:42

She was 35. Noone will ever know if that adversly affected my sibling but i'm sure you question it...no history of anything "odd" in the family...

RonansMummy · 18/08/2010 16:52

It depends how much energy and what your health is like. Some people would be fine having children at 50 others should stop at 30.

kingfix · 18/08/2010 19:59

What seems 'too old' also depends what's normal in the people around you. I hardly know anyone who had even started having children at 30, let alone stopped, so 30 seems pretty young.

On the other hand, my SIL was 36 when she had hers and all the mothers in her area were in their early 20s so she felt ancient.

My mum had her last child at 43. She says the pregnancy and early years were fine but picking up a teenage daughter from a party at 2 am when you are 60, not to mention delaying retirement so you can help them through college, is another matter,

christie2 · 21/08/2010 02:37

I had my first at 33 and my last at 44. All was fine.

christie2 · 21/08/2010 02:38

I had my first at 33 and my last at 44. All was fine. I do not feel too old and the older kids help me out and seem to love having the little one around.

CoinOperatedGirl · 21/08/2010 02:53

My Dp was 45 when we concieved dc3, 46 when he was born. He regards this as his childbearing limit lol. He doesn't want to be much older and still doing the night shift. I agree really, we want some kind of freedom at the end, barring death and horribleness.

MUM2BLESS · 22/08/2010 19:19

This is so personal.

Some have kids in their teens, 20's, 30's. Not everyone is able to conceive when they want to.

Let appreciate the fact that many of us are able to have children. My heart goes out for those who were not able to.

NellyTheElephant · 24/08/2010 13:37

A great friend of mine just had her first children (natural fraternal twins) at 41. It doesn't seem old to me somehow, she was over the moon - it was right for her. It might be worth remembering that the likelihood of fraternal twins does increase quite significantly as you get older!
