I was surprised to see that under this topic of 'large families' people are discussing having their 4th or even 3rd child.
Are there many decently sized large families out there?

4 doesn't seem that large to me but then I've got 9 so not surprising I suppose.

My age gaps are:
Dd1-dd2 3y5mo

Dd2-dd3-2y6mo

Dd3-dd4 13 mo

I did have 2 miscarriages between dd1-2 and dd2-3 which is why the gaps are bigger.

juuule · 07/08/2010 09:24

I agree, D0G,that small age gaps seem to attract more comments than the number of children.

My age gaps are

ds1-ds2 27 months
ds2-ds3 4 1/2 years (divorce and remarriage in between)
ds3-dd 28months
dd-ds4 36months

none of mine are small age gaps, so it's the number of children that gets commented on. I have a friend who had her 5 children within 7 years, that's hard going.

D0G- the 13 month gap was actually the easiest so far which was bit of a shocker! Dp was so upset when we found oh I was expecting dd4 as he couldn't even remember doing the deed as we were still in the baby fog Grin

I have 5y10m from no1 to no4 so pretty close in age and yes we do get some comments about them all being so close.

I think 4 is the smallest end of large family size.
Its when problems such as cars start to present themselves and people start looking at you in horror.

I would have loved to have had more but 4 was dhs limit due to money and space ( I don't expect as much as him) In fact 3 was his limit due to dds birth but 4 sort of happened

my gaps are
1-2 20 mths
2-3 20mths
3-4 2yrs 8 mths

ds1 is 7 and ds3 is 15 mths.
I am so so broody for another and finding it hard to get past but will have to

elvislives · 08/08/2010 12:20

I wouldn't consider 4 to be a small family, but it does seem to be becoming more "normal" these days. My eldest is 24 so people used to look at our 4 in horror.

Our gaps are

DD1 to DS1- 18 months
DS1 to DS2- 2 years exactly
DS2 to DS3- 2 years
DS3 to DD2- 15.5 years.

Our eldest was 5.5 when we had the 4th, and 21 when her sister was born Grin

We've got 2 DC and I feel that we're a small family. I'm one of 6 and DH is one of many, many more. We've been discussing DC 3 a great length but I love the '3 is the new 2' idea here and will use it as my final argument for DC 3 :)

asdx2 · 09/08/2010 07:04

I have five, would like a couple more though. The large gap between four and five is because I thought I'd done at four and then had number five which made me broody again.
ds1 to ds2......18months
ds2 to dd1......4yrs 2months
ddi to ds3......21months
ds3 to dd2......8yrs

becky7000 · 15/08/2010 21:14

DC1 was only 3.9 when DC4 was born (no twins) so it is definately the closeness people comment on rather than the number. 4 DCs with bigger gaps would look more usual I think.

SpeedyGonzalez · 15/08/2010 21:17

I think 1-2 is small, 3-4 medium and 5 plus is large. Anything over 6 is just ridiculous Grin.

queenbee10 · 18/08/2010 16:14

i have four and think its a nice number we're nice and even

fidelma · 18/08/2010 22:09

4+ is large.we have 4 and it feels large but I love it.Would love another but I agree you have to be mad to have 5!!!

cherrymonster · 08/09/2010 19:44

i have:

ds1-ds2 2 year 3 month gap
ds2-dd1 3 year 9 month gap
dd1-dd2 11 1/2 month age gap

i found the age gap between the girls by far the easiest as dd1 had only just stopped being a tiny baby when another tiny baby came along. the worst was the gap between the 2 boys as ds1 was horribly jealous of ds2 (and still is)

CardyMow · 01/10/2010 21:30

I have:

DD-DS1 4 year 1 month

DS1-DS2 19 months

DS2-DC4 7 yrs 2months (when DC4 is born in January lol)

I wasn't expecting such a large gap, but have had 3 mc's and lost a baby at almost 20 weeks since DS2, hence the 7 yr gap. I had just about given up on the idea of DC4! I am umming and ahhing about having one more after this, if only so DC4 isn't on his own through primary school/at home, a 7yr ga is just sooooo big. DP isn't convinced yet...but may be soon hahahaha.

DiscoDaisy · 01/10/2010 21:39

DD1 - DD2 4 1/2 years
DD2 - DD3 19 mths
DD3 - DS1 15 mths
DS1 - DS2 13 mths

Between child no2 and child no5 is 4yr and 1 mth.
