Religion Recognition days?

My employer already has days recognising Diwali and Eid, as well as culturally or religiously British festivals. They put up posters and decorations, and have appropriate food in the staff canteen. They want to widen this to other faiths and cultures. Rosh Hashannah and Yom Kippur have been proposed, but I don’t think they’re necessarily suitable. They’re the days that Jewish staff are most likely to be absent, for one thing! I was going to suggest Passover and Chanuka instead. Far more opportunity for good food (so Jewish 😄) and good stories.

What do you think?

Sounds positive. My Jewish colleague hung dreidels on the Christmas tree. 😁

That's a lovely idea. Maybe depends what they mean by appropriate food, could they do kosher for Passover food? Or would it be more cakes and things?

Yom Kippur would definitely be a bit odd for them to do.

Can you imagine your employer kashering a treif catering kitchen?! 🤣 No, I expect they’ll serve traditional Passover foods alongside the usual offerings. Eg matzo brei for pudding instead of crumble and custard.

I think Apple and honey and honey cake would be great for Rosh Hashanah, they are crowd pleasers! Hanukkah is always a good one too. It’s nice that they do this though.

You could do it on the days leading up to Rosh Hashana, or in between RH and Yom Kippur. Apples, honey, honey cakes, etc

I know a big company who put up a Sukkah every year.

My company has only just expanded to toast in the morning 😂 but I usually bake. Matzah Crack went down very well

PurpleThistle7 · 19/05/2026 14:36

Shavuot? Cheesecake and cheeseboards?
Honey cake and various apple things are a crowd pleaser though appreciate it would be unlikely to be right on Rosh Hashanah if they want Jewish staff to enjoy it. Yom Kippur is just silly. Chanukah... donuts?

I love hamentashen but it's a tricky one for a canteen!

At a company I used to work for, my Jewish colleagues and I all baked honey cakes and left them in the communal kitchen for people to nosh on, with some supporting internal comms. It became an informal ’bake off’ and gave rise to much chat about different recipes and the symbolism of Rosh Hashanah.
