Purim

Hi everyone.

I have been invited to a Purim party tomorrow, I have to admit I do not know anything of this.

So I'm here to ask for the etiquette!

I've done some research and plan to take some pastries and chocolates over, but beyond that, can anyone give me any background?

I'd like to know more!

Thanks!

Most Jewish festivals are a case of "they tried to kill us, we won, let's eat". Purim is slightly different as instead of just celebrating by having a massive dinner, we also have a fancy dress party and get very drunk.

Evil man Haman, advisor to King Ahashverosh, tried to have all Jews in ancient Persia killed by decree. His plan was foiled by Queen Esther (who was, unbeknownst to her husband the king, Jewish) and her cousin Mordechai and the end result was Haman being hanged instead of all the Jews. So we celebrate this by eating, drinking, giving to charity and giving friends small gifts of food. We also read the story of Purim and every time Haman's name is said everyone starts booing and making lots of noise.

Basically, it's an utterly bonkers holiday but also lots of fun.

I can go into more detail if you want, but it might help if you tell us more about what kind of party it is! Is it at your friend's house?

Thank you so much, that's really interesting and I appreciate the background!

Yes, it's at our friends house. I'm really looking forward to it but wanted to understand more before I went!

From the sounds of things, offerings of pastries and wine may be a good shout?!

If your friend doesn't keep strictly kosher, that sounds like a perfect gift :)

You'll have a great time, if it's at a friend's house it will probably just be a really fun house party! I'm so jealous 😂

They've assured me as such, but I didn't want to be disrespectful turning up without so much as an idea what it's all about! We are really looking forward to it! Costumes at the ready!
