Gift Ideas for a Mum-To-Be

Good morning everyone 🙂

My friend (non Jewish) is married to a Jewish lady, and they are expecting their first baby later this year.
I don't really know my friend's wife incredibly well, but I would like to buy a little gift for when the baby comes, that recognises her faith, as it is important to her. I'll also buy other bits for my friend, but I'd really like to find a keepsake gift for my friend's wife.

I have absolutely no idea where to even start looking, as I'm not Jewish, but I was wondering if anyone could suggest any nice ideas, or point me in the right direction, please?

Thank you xxx

The traditional baby gift in my family is a kiddush cup with the baby's name on it but that might be a bit personal if she's not a good friend. And no gifts before the baby is born - lots of reasons but it's very bad luck if she's religious at all.

There are loads and loads of beautiful Jewish children's books. Let him know to sign up for PJ Library as soon as the baby is born and they'll get a Jewish book in the post each month.

When is she due? You could do a couple Jewish children's books on the theme of whatever holiday is closest - or something like this?

or if into that sort of thing, a 'baby's first chanukah' onesie? So much Christmas stuff around that time of year so sometimes nice to recognise both sides.

Sorry; she's due early October. So very very early days in the pregnancy, but I wanted to get some ideas together. X

There are beautiful wooden Jewish children’s toys out there. Might need to ship from the states but you have time.

we had a wooden Shabbat set and still have a wooden Chanukiah set. Lovely to add to a play kitchen eventually.

This sort of thing - https://foter.com/pin/13834998

Asda often have Chanukah pyjamas online in the winter, and I think they do them in all sizes from baby to adult.

What a lovely thought. Just to add to the voices saying don't give anything for the baby until the baby is here - it's a pretty universal rule, not wanting to tempt fate I suppose? Some people don't buy anything at all or even decorate a nursery, before baby arrives. Our slightly batty compromise with modern practicality was to store gifted items in my parents' garage, in a sort of out of sight out of mind way!

If you're keen to give something sooner to show you are thinking of them, you could try a red thread bracelet? Like this sort of thing: https://www.etsy.com/uk/listing/4325439204/red-braided-hamsa-evil-eye-bracelet

They are for the mum to wear while she is pregnant as a sort of lucky charm.

Absolutely; I wouldn't give a present to a non-Jewish friend until baby had arrived either, so makes total sense 🙂

Thank you so much for taking the time to reply; I'm really grateful. I love the bracelet! Got some lovely ideas now x
