I truly can't even (dual citizen living in the US).

I dare say that while I think the US is culturally more friendly to Jews (part of the reason we moved), at the moment I trust the UK government on antisemitism more than the US one!

SpuytenDuyvil · 19/01/2026 02:22

As an American Jew, I'm afraid I agree with @knitnerd90

There are problems in the States, but they didn't have the weekly pro-Palestinian marches like London and I don't think they would have got away with banning the Maccabi fans there. US Jewish population is much bigger.

SpuytenDuyvil · 19/01/2026 03:24

Yes, we are over 7 million. But the US population is almost 340M, so only about 2%.

Nossuperesse · 19/01/2026 04:04

Jews make up about 2.4% of the US population and about .5% of the UK population so nearly 5x larger by percentage.
And in New York City 12% of the population is Jewish.

That's true.

US college anti Semitic sentiment under the guise of pro Palestine seems just as bad as in UK universities though, maybe worse.

There's also an upsurge of anti Semitism and hatefulness towards Israel on the further right (Candace Owens, Tucker Carlson, Nick Fuentes among others). There isn't really a parallel to that on the UK right wing.

(The Guardian I know but the article is quite good on how Fuentes was a fringe figure until recently but has been gaining ground in a disturbing way).

White nationalist Nick Fuentes is exposing a civil war among US Republicans: ‘We look like clowns’

Tucker Carlson’s interview with the activist revealed the mainstream right is being flooded by extremism – and it’s now impossible to contain

Overall, in the US, it seems like problems of violent crime, mental illness & drug use are overall worse, and this seems to make it less physically safe on the whole & more likely that if someone is violently anti Semitic, they might be able to carry out an attack than in the UK (obviously there's the issues with gun laws to factor in).

I'm a joint UK/US citizen (grew up in the states but immigrated to Scotland 20 years ago) and it's never occurred to me to move back. Neither feels safer than the other - easier to avoid some of the issues in the states if you live in a particular community (my dad is in Pittsburgh and his entire neighbourhood is Jewish) but easier to have bigger issues when there is an issue (my dad's synagogue had a mass shooting about 10 years ago). So I'm not sure I'd fix anything if I took my kids back to the states really. Also I have other fundamental issues with raising children in the control of Trump (I have a teenage daughter)

That's horrible re your dad's synagogue. Risk of attacks does seem to be rising in the US.

And there's obviously other issues with Trump's US, as you say. Things certainly seem unsettled even more now with the sabre-rattling over Greenland..

US antisemitism at its most alarming level | The Jerusalem Post

The antisemitism that led to the Jackson synagogue being burnt down is very much alive, and now at its most concerning levels.

@Carla786 Are you Jewish? Can I ask why you've started another thread about this on AIBU?
