I don’t have the energy but I appreciate what you do. I asked MN to move the AIBU pagers thread to the Middle East board and they’ve obviously refused since it’s still there.

They told me I could hide it if I wanted.

It is exhausting having to see the same old vitriolic shit about Israel on every fucking thread.

Oh I see a lurker had my post deleted, so I assume the truth must have hit a nerve. The one thing antisemites hate more than Jews is being called antisemitic.

butterdish601 · 25/09/2024 17:37

They clearly can't stay away from us! And who can blame them, we're great 😉😘

MotiRoller · 25/09/2024 17:41

Incredible they had mine deleted too 😂😂😂 pathetic

It must sting that we've endured and outlasted the civilisations that have tried so hard to erase us. Empires rise and fall and here we still are.

79Helene · 25/09/2024 18:05

Hello lurkers! You evidently lead very boring lives and can't find anything better to do with your time than stalk Jewish Mumsnetters, so I'll post this here and suggest watching it might be a better use of your time. Tomorrow night, BBC2.

I'd just really like to know what kind of lives the lurkers lead if this is how they choose to spend their time? Can I suggest finding a different hobby, one that's a bit less pathetic in nature? Maybe take up running! Might help clear your mind of this obsession with us. I think we'd all be happier for it.

BeretInParis · 27/09/2024 09:59

@79Helene have you watched the film? I'm just not sure if I can bring myself to do so. :(

EllaDisenchanted · 27/09/2024 10:16

I haven’t @BeretInParis , it’s too much.

79Helene · 27/09/2024 10:51

@BeretInParis I did and it was devastating. To be honest, I don't recommend watching it. There are however many, many people who should watch it and it's not anyone on this thread.

BeretInParis · 27/09/2024 11:28

I'm sorry @79Helene. That's tough - but unsurprising. You confirm my worst fears. And also that there are many people who should watch it but never will.

I have a friend in Israel and we've been messaging today. She's scared for her friend's children of fighting age. She asked me how things were going here. I told her that all the loud people think Israel is a genocidal pariah state run by a megalomaniac and there should be a ceasefire, with instant removal from Gaza. And everything will be fine and we'll all live happily ever after. I told her many quiet people think differently but do nothing. And our new Foreign secretary is now refunding UNWRA because he's an idiot who doesn't know that men can't have cervixes.

I despair. I'm not facing immediate existential crisis but it feels like it looms ever closer.

butterdish601 · 27/09/2024 12:35

I don't think I can watch it either, in all honesty. The snippets I've seen elsewhere (not necessarily of this documentary, but of 7th Oct) are enough for me. I feel a bit pathetic saying this. I'm guessing we all had relatives who experienced worse or differently awful things in the 40s and before and yet I can't face a BBC documentary. I felt really affected by Hersch Goldberg's murder - again, pathetic, it's not like he was my son or even someone i knew. But I do think it's important to protect our own mental health.

I don’t think it’s pathetic. Our families went through the holocaust because they had no choice. And for many of them, it destroyed them far beyond the war years. The second and even third generational trauma is a well known consequence as well.
it’s not pathetic to not expose yourself to something that is not meant to be a part of the human experience. There are other ways to stand witness, or to be a part of the healing. Those who can watch, watch, but I really don’t think we should be self-shaming if it’s too much.
And butter, Rachel brought Hersch to life for us, we felt we knew him. It’s not pathetic to care.

It's not pathetic in the slightest. I'll never be able to unsee what I watched last night and I don't think you should put yourselves through that because it will not bring you any benefit, only pain.

However, my feeling towards Israel has always been one of ambivalence over the years, so it felt important to me that I watch it.

butterdish601 · 27/09/2024 14:15

Thanks Ella and Helene, you are both totally right.

I agree with what you say about Hersch, Ella. His mother comes across as an amazingly strong woman - in fact, just an amazing woman. As an atheist, I was strangely inspired and moved by her faith and I hope it is giving her some strength and comfort in what must be the darkest, most testing time anyone can imagine.

MotiRoller · 27/09/2024 19:26

There was a heartbreaking story about the dad of one of the other hostages killed alongside Hirsch. He made a vow that if his son was returned to him he would become religious. After the funeral someone asked if he still planned to become religious and he said yes - because one way or another his son had been returned to him and he would keep his vow. Devastating. I haven’t been to Israel since last year (tho I have family there) and I can only imagine the trauma their society is in between everything that has happened in the last 12 months. Horror after horror. The lurkers have no idea that all anyone in Israel wants is not to have to send their sons and daughters into battle.

Gloriana1 · 28/09/2024 06:12

I watched it.

It was heartbreaking.

I can't believe that anyone can watch that film and not support Israel.

Gloriana1 · 28/09/2024 06:19

Who are Hammas and Hezbollah?

Who is Iran?

Bad people.

Humdingerydoo · 28/09/2024 07:36

Speaking of ignorance - has anyone seen this delightful piece of "journalism" by Reuters?

https://www.reuters.com/world/middle-east/gunmen-shoot-kill-aid-worker-gaza-charity-family-say-2024-09-27/

So gunmen "accidentally" murder her because of mistaken identity, according to Hamas. Who did they think they were murdering? Because clearly they thought they were murdering someone else who they would have considered a legitimate target. So which civilian in Gaza did they think they were murdering?

They go on to mention that it's actually Israel's fault as there's no effective policing in Gaza because of the war. The war started by those who were meant to be effectively policing Gaza.

But the real kicker - "Israel and Hamas have been fighting since gunmen from the Palestinian militant group stormed into southern Israel on Oct. 7, killing 1,200 people and capturing some 250 hostages, by Israeli tallies."

So not terrorists, and also you should doubt the numbers given as they're provided by Israel.

Fuck Reuters for publishing this piece of 💩

Humdingerydoo · 28/09/2024 07:42

(We've clearly been slacking and need to do better at controlling the media! Maybe we should direct the space laser at them for a bit to remind them who is boss?)

Gloriana1 · 28/09/2024 08:07

C'mon now @Humdingerydoo

'Accidentally murdering' people happens all the time!

Humdingerydoo · 28/09/2024 08:24

Gloriana1 · 28/09/2024 08:07

C'mon now @Humdingerydoo

'Accidentally murdering' people happens all the time!

Specially with dozens of bullets 🤦🏻‍♀️

Other sources refer to the gunmen as Hamas, and mention them murdering her after she refused to hand over the aid money she had collected.

I don't know what the truth is, I just know it's definitely not what Reuters say.

Gloriana1 · 28/09/2024 08:36

Look @Humdingerydoo, I'm always going about me business and people DO accidentally get murdered.

It's just a thing that happens.

Who hasn't accidentally murdered someone?

It's an everyday thing. Surely?
