Which university campuses have the least problems with anti-semitism

Dd in year 12, and I'm really worried about anti semitism on campus, especially coming from a reasonably safe bubble of NW London. I know which unis have the most Jewish students (by JSoc numbers), but which are the best/worst for Jews? Dd is not outspoken. If she is among "friends" criticising Israel/Zionism, she will likely stay quiet rather than get into an argument, so I'm concerned about her feeling safe.

Purely from what I've noticed, and not any actual survey, the former polys seem less embroiled with this stuff than the red bricks. My DH teaches at Manchester Met. Unlike Manchester University there hasn't been any significant action, as far as he can see. I'm at Uni of Liverpool and there's an encampment.

@PurpleChrayn thanks, but DD is definitely aiming for Russell group

Thank you @Alwayslookonthe . This is interesting. I find it so sad that Bristol is supposed to be aspirational university but I will be discouraging DD from applying there. Where can they feel safe? I have never encouraged mixing only with other Jews, but now find myself telling DD that she has to take into account the number of Jewish students wherever she applies so that she doesn't feel isolated and has somewhere to turn if she feels unsafe.

Dd has just finished 3 years at York. She loved it. She was pretty much the only Jewish person there as far as she was aware. She didn't come up against any antisemitism which I was thrilled about. There is a pro palestinian gathering however it appears to be genuinely about caring about the Palestinians (which both dd and I do equally for the Israelis) as opposed to thinly disguised jew hatred thrown in. Two of her closest friends are observant Muslims and know she is Jewish. There are no problems thank the lord and nor should there be. I am concerned however as she has currently applied to various unis to do her masters.....Manchester being one of them 😟

Call me a cynic but I don't think the encampments and protests have anything to do with supporting Palestinians. By their very nature they are exercises in Jew-hate. Otherwise we'd see pro-Ukraine, pro-Sudan, anti-China encampments too. But we don't. Because "pro-Palestine" is an excuse to hate Jews.

This has been a long time in the making. I'm reading Dave Rich's book "The Left's Jewish Problem" and it's quite striking, the trajectory that began in the 1960s and has infected academia.

Absolutely agree with you.

York Uni has a fairly active Jewish society!

ETA that I broadly agree with you /your dd about the encampment there - or at least I'd say it hasn't been as in your face as some others, and there's been no violence that I know of.

DifferentNameForThisBoard · 18/06/2024 20:34

I have a DC at one of the unis that has seen quite a lot of protest/an encampment etc. My DC has been actively involved in the JSOC, has a wide mix of Jewish and non-Jewish friends and does not hide their Jewishness. They have steered clear of any protests, and have personally not experienced any significant antisemitic incidents.

It is worth remembering that what is reported in the press can be somewhat sensationalised when compared with the day to day reality on campus. I would therefore try not to let fear of antisemitism dictate where your DD applies. I do think somewhere with an active JSOC is good though.

@DifferentNameForThisBoard thank you for your comment. It's good to hear. I'm not someone to usually over-inflate these concerns, but this has been worrying me.
