Can anyone recommend some comforting Jewish dishes or a good recipe book ?

Hopefully a bit more light hearted topic.
To my surprise I recently discovered I have some Jewish heritage. First through an Ancestry dna test and then a bit of digging in my family tree.
Like a lot of non Jewish people I’m aware of some well known Jewish foods like bagels, chopped liver and gefillte fish. Not made any of those apart from some bagels years ago ! Can someone recommend some typical Jewish dishes that I can try making. Obviously I don’t keep kosher but I am a bit of a foodie and it would be nice to have some connection with my relative from back in the day through food.
My mum had an 80s Evelyn Rose book which she left to me but there aren’t that many traditional recipes. Was debating making a modern version of Tzimmes today but wasn’t sure if it would go with the usual roasties and Yorkshire puds. Thanks in advance !

The Book of Jewish Food by Claudia Roden. Has lots of great stories about food histories and cultures, as well as the recipes.

Absolutely this! It is more than just a recipe book, it is social history as well.

was going to say ... Evelyn Rose 😅 I have three of her cookbooks; 2 from my grandmother with her annotation, and one more recent one (the international one or something like that). That is where I turn to for classic Jewish food. Holishkes, challah, knaidlech (for chicken soup), potato kugel, should all be in their. Cholent, I mean I have never met anyone who followed a recipe for cholent!

you need matza meal to make knaidlich.

I find the recipes generally better than Evelyn Rose's. TBH got some dishes I get both versions side by side and make my own mishmash of the two.

@EllaDisenchanted I’m not sure I’ve seen her recipes for kugel etc but I’ll have another thumb through it. Might try and get the international Jewish cookery one off Abe books. I’m quite old and I remember ER on Yorkshire TV in the 70s !
@ticketstickets ah, i thought you could process matzo to use as meal !

@Simplesimonsdog I was just coming on to say Evelyn Rose's International Jewish Cookbook.
She's the Delia of Jewish Cooking and all her recipies 'work'.
Her honey glazed carrots are the jewel of our Shabbat table. I make them in the oven though for ease and they are delicious!
(Perfect with a roast).

I would recommend Jamie Geller online. She had fantastic recipes and videos with really good step by step instructions. Her challah braiding videos are fab and she is such a lovely presenter and writer.

Best wishes on your culinary journey. Jewish cooking is so varied there is influence from all corners of the world.
'Beh-teavon' - which means Bon Appetite!

Or take the easy route and buy the mix at Tesco! Called Kneidelach mix by Osem or Telma in the kosher aisle. Small rectangle box - add egg or water (can't remember which) and you're good to go!

You can. My DM used to do that when we ran out. It's never as fine or even-textured as the bought stuff, but perfectly adequate for kneidlach or 'bread-crumbing' things before frying.

I think it’s egg and oil/or chicken soup. 😋
