What age are you planning to retire?

As the thread title states - what age are you planning to retire? I'm a long way away (decades) but would like to retire at 60 and currently trying to figure the finances out!

Anyone who has or is planning to retire before state pension age any tips on how you managed it are very welcome.

In my head... 50 maybe 53, still got decades.
We are very lucky to be able to maxing out our pensions, overpaying mortgage (should be done in years), all bonuses into pension. If the shit hits the fan when we much older, we will downsize.
My husband is a bit older than me but I want him to retire early as well, so he will retire before me and we will live comfortably of my salary for few years, he will then take out his 25%, I will
Follow that. Should have some saving as well.
So yeah, that's the very rough idea 😂

Mortgage done in 10 years I meant*

CornishDew · 03/02/2025 21:15

I’m hoping around 55, possibly go down to part time at 50.

hideawayforever · 03/02/2025 21:19

i always wanted to retire at 55, but im 60 now and it looks like it'll be more around 63. got a mortgage to finish off and house repairs/ do up to do, before I can.

Shubbypubby · 03/02/2025 21:25

I want to semi retire in my 50s and still work part time but in a much less stressful job with far less responsibility (obviously will receive much less pay). In about 10 years but I still have a primary aged DD and an older child so it depends on university, if they need financial help, still living at home etc.

Wintersoltice · 03/02/2025 21:26

I'm aiming for 60

Radionowhere · 03/02/2025 21:34

I'm 50 this year and can't imagine what I would do if I retired now! Or why I would retire from my well paid job tbh.
Plan to carry on until at least 60 but be gone by 65. DH is 4 years older and is thinking similarly, but will probably carry on a bit longer age wise as he doesn't see the point of retiring if I'm still working 😆.
We both want to help our young adult children out financially, as much as we can. That's very important to both of us.
There is a possibility of a fairly significant inheritance coming to DH in the next few years, we will reassess then, if it happens.

Powderblue1 · 03/02/2025 21:36

We're planning on 60. Late 30s now, have large home which we plan to downsize and three investment properties. We heavily invest in pensions too

2chocolateoranges · 03/02/2025 21:38

I plan on going very part time by 60 and working maybe 2 or 3 shifts a week until I get my pension. But who know how my life will take me. Mortgage will be paid off in 12 months.

doodahdayy · 03/02/2025 21:39

I'm 40 and haven't even thought about it yet.

rivalsbinge · 03/02/2025 21:40

I'm almost 50 and planning on 63, I should have mortgage paid, savings and pensions sorted and who knows about elderly parents but I'm planning on going to Thailand for 5+ years for the first part of my retirement health and visas allowing.

As I can then rent out my uk house and live my life in some sunny spaces.

coolcahuna · 03/02/2025 21:42

I'm 48, would like to move to something more low key at 50 and retire at 55. Could all change but this is my thinking at the moment.

KevinAndTracy · 03/02/2025 21:43

I'm 50 and hoping to retire somewhere between 57 and 60 if possible

Obviously the longer I keep working then the better my pension will be so assuming I am still in good health and my job isn't causing me too much stress I will try to push on til 60

Doubledded123 · 03/02/2025 21:44

Probably 60. Boyf will be 68, same will rent the house and go travelling
India , Sri Lanka... ds will be adults by then.

Fluff111 · 03/02/2025 21:46

Been PT for 10 years, no kids will retire at 53.

Pieceofpurplesky · 03/02/2025 21:47

At the earliest 65. Don't have any savings.

BondStreet · 03/02/2025 21:49

Planning for 55. Will be mortgage free this year, have been smart with investments, crypto and have a very healthy pension.

We’ve also got a few buy to lets that will generate income for us.

Dillythedallyduck · 03/02/2025 21:59

My plan was to semi-retire at 57, then do something low-key and part time until I was eligible for my state pension. However, I've recently started a new job that I can see myself lasting until 60 (health permitting) so the longer I work the better.

MarvellousMable · 03/02/2025 22:02

Having seen what retirement did to my parents (depression, anxiety, repeating themselves about times of old) I will be working for as long as possible.

Currently have a big stress job to pay down the mortgage but will happily switch to a lower stress one, or one that means something to me, such as looking after abandoned / abused fellow beings - the latter would be millions more stressful than my current one, but if money were of no concern I would do that until my last breath.

mariaberria · 03/02/2025 22:02

Looking at what I can do when just today. I'm 53 and knackered!!

Looking to move part time to 3 to 4 days a week and reduce the amount I pay to the tax man every month to start with. Then perhaps sack it all in in 5 years. Or less !

I am no longer the energetic enthusiast workaholic that I was!

Anyone in your 30s - plan now and get saving! I've got a good pot but want to keep filling. Mortgage paid off already.

Spectre8 · 03/02/2025 22:06
  1. I'll see how i am at that age maybe drop down to part time.
dothehokeycokey · 03/02/2025 22:29

I'm mid forties now and consider there's no way I could continue at the rate I am in my own business full time (more than full time hrs if you include the not client facing side of a business)forever or until retirement age of 67

My plan is to full pelt for the next five years and get a decent wedge paid into my pension and get a good sum saved up in isas etc and then drop a couple of days so be three days max a week with no late nights or weekends after age 50 and then keep working while I can.

At 55 ideally I would be doing two days a week and continue to do that as long as I feel I can.

I see how bored and insular my mums world has got since retiring and I want to travel while I'm well and fit enough to so I think keeping going is good for the mind aswell as the extra money to do things

Needmilkandbread · 03/02/2025 22:55

58

Perfectlystill · 03/02/2025 23:15

Can't believe all these people saying 50!

You're still (hopefully) fit and young and energetic at 50 - it would be mad to out your feet up and take up knitting.

I think maybe 60. But even then I'll want to do something

Travel while young enough to enjoy it and live overseas to see what it’s like. Certainly no putting feet up and I can’t knit!
