DC15 wants to start investing - how can I help?

So DC has a nice little chunk in his savings and wants to start investing instead of leaving in the bank. He's mentioned the S&P 500 to start which seems like a safe enough investment.

But where do we start? I literally know absolutely nothing about investments - is there a marketplace? Where do we start?

Thanks so much in advance

Sorry, "county Brexit" should read "cunty" Brexit...

This is a podcast the guy does. On Facebook you can ask people questions and they explain easily and clearly. It's useful.
I think one of the Apps lets you 'pretend' to invest your money and you can track how 'well' it might've done - or how rubbish you are at making decisions.

S&P 500 is anything but a ‘safe’ investment 🤣. It could and probably will, drop 50% at some point. The big drop in 2008 took over a decade to recover. If he understands that and can handle the fact that there is a crash every 5-7 years and is investing for at least 10 years then crack on.
Far better to use a Global index fund, either with or without emerging markets. Still US tech heavy but the risk isn’t quite so concentrated.

Your son will need to undertake substantial research into the tax regime in ROI.

There are punitive rates for capital gains on investments (in excess of 40% tax for ETFs, and over 30% tax for investments in individual stocks), as well income tax on dividend returns at your marginal rate.
