Inheritance: heirloom purchases

I’m about to inherit a fairly modest sum of money (a few £k). I want to buy one or more beautiful things with it that will stand the test of time. Maybe to pass down but most importantly things that I will treasure. An investment in the sense of really good quality beautiful things but they don’t need to appreciate in value.

So perhaps an item or two of clothing, art or homeware. My family have never really had “nice things” so I’m slightly struggling for ideas. Help me!

Have a look at some online auctions to give you some ideas. There are some beautiful things you can get at ridiculously cheap prices!

I bought a watch that I had been coveting for years. I wear it every day and it makes me smile every time I look at it.

I bought a cashmere & silk shawl in a lovely design that I know my Aunt would have loved. Every time I wear it, I think of her.

I have some artwork that I bought in a gallery and whilst I have no clue if it's going to be worth more in years to come, I hope my children enjoy it when I die as something that I loved.
So my advice is buy something you really love first and foremost

I'd buy something by this amazing artist

I know this is very specific and not everyone's taste but I saw the most incredible one of these on the antiques roadshow and I've always wanted one. I just love the thought that someone used it before-they're such a luxury www.ebay.co.uk/itm/285003865241?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=4szkoEDWQQS&sssrc=4429486&ssuid=52kvaKg9TvW&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY

I bought a £5k painting from an academy-recognised artist. The painting I love, it’s the centrepiece of my living room and everyone comments on it. I can’t lose it or spill my dinner on it nor will I get mugged for it. It’s so heavy and huge and has archival glass on it a burglar would struggle too. With another inheritance I bought a handbag : but the painting was the smarter buy.

My mum bought a diamond ring, which I absolutely covet 😄 she didn't ask me before she bought it, but she was hoping (as the only daughter) that I'd like it. And then it will be passed on to my daughter eventually.

But mainly she just loves it and wears it every day, and it's a beautiful, constant reminder of the person who left her the money. Which is precisely what she wanted from it.

I’ve got a small barometer on the wall that come from my grandads

often give it a tap on the way past and ask my grandad what the weather’s going to be like today

never really noticed it in his house but absolutely treasure it now and it’s not massive or obtrusive can be passed down

When my dad died I bought a painting at auction by a painter who meant something to both my dad and me. I paid about 2.5k and then spent a decent amount of money getting it framed beautifully. I feel joy every time I look at it and am only sorry that dad isn't here to enjoy it too.

I'd definitely buy Jewelry, probably antique. I LOVE jewelry, choose carefully every day from a range of costume, silver, gold value from £5 to thousands, all bits that I just love. I'd add to the collection. Always wanted something art deco and emerald. So probably that. But unless you love jewelry and wear it, its pointless buying to put in a box or safe.
