Stupid question alert about JISA into adult ISA at age 18

Sorry if this is a stupid question!

My children each have a junior ISA, and I understand that once they turn 18 the money transfers from the JISA into a regular ISA. Does that happen regardless of the amount in the JISA?

I've calculated that if you saved the maximum amount per year for 18 years (I HAVEN'T!!) that it would be worth £162k + the interest earned once they turn 18 - would all of this just go into a single ISA at age 18?

(My children won't have anywhere near this amount, but family want to give money each year and I'm trying to work out the best way to manage this)

I wouldn't put more into a JISA than you are prepared to give them free access to at 18.

You can bring them up sensibly, but 16-25 can be a turbulent time that access to ££ wouldn't help.

You cam move money between ISAs once it is under the wrapper.

Oh yes I completely agree, but family want to put money into an account in their names (clearly they don't trust me with it!) and by the time they are 18 it could be a reasonable amount, hence wondering if it all just goes into one ISA (which seems weird seeing as the limit to pay into a regular ISA is £20k - I know that accumulates interest over time but never to the amount that you might get if you paid regularly into a JISA). Maybe nobody ever pays that much into a JISA for exactly the reason you mention!

To answer your question OP, yes. The full amount would transfer into an ISA.

Once it's wrapped in an ISA, it's wrapped until you take it out.

Moving JISA / ISA, or between ISA providers; it's keeps its tax-free status.

The £20k limit is irrelevant. That's just how much you can put into an ISA per year. Once it's in, you can move the whole pot around, regardless of value.

Thank you @annabofana
