Recommendations on resources to learn about investing

I’m wanting to start educating myself on investments. Please could I ask for the best resources you’ve found - books, you tube channels etc? 🙏😊

Motley Fool is not a bad place to start. £99/year for their basic Stock Advisor service gets you started on a plan. They're hard on the upsell though, which pisses me off a bit.

They have good principles though. Buy equities in good companies and hold for 5+ years.

I suppose it all depends on what your trying to achieve. There's loads of advice out there, and a lot of it is shit. Even worse if you want to make quick or market busting returns.

Thank you for this.
yes I was assuming there’s be a lot of rubbish advice out there!

no goods books or resource recommendations anyone?

Hard to give details of books, podcasts, YouTube channels without knowing what aspects of investing you are wanting to learn about. Most people don't need to know about stock picking, day trading and things like that. Instead they need more simple things about using Pension and ISA tax wrappers and buying a fund which spreads over global equities.

Books
The Simple Path To Wealth
How To Own The World
Reset
The Meaningful Money Handbook

Podcasts
Money To The Masses
Meaningful Money
Choose FI

Thank you @nannynick this is the type of thing I was after

@SpringGreensPreens
I concur with nanny and have read the same things.

I also cross reference anything I decide to buy eg vanguard life stragety fund with trust net and morning star.
I spent a long tike researching because I didn't have a clue and came back to basic index trackers or something really broad like vanguard life strategy.

Peter Lynch - One Up on Wall Street
The Psychology of Money - Morgan Housel

Both brilliant re investing

I set off on the same path about a year ago, and actually easily found lots that is educational, aligns and is sensible.

Podcasts: LOADS of choice from major publishing sources, Times, FT, BBC, etc. I’m addicted to one called Cash Chats (by Andy Webb) that is very clear and easy to listen to. There are literally thousands tapping into every aspect of investing, many that are weekly and some daily.

Newspapers: I’m lucky to have brief access to all wide selection of press from Monday to Saturday, and on Saturdays I grab the Money section of the Telegraph and take phone photos of any articles I want to read or reference back to. It’s been very educational. However if I had to pay for them I’d wipe out all the interest I earn per year from my meagre investments!

Forums: Here! I also browse Pistonheads Finance (thousands of pages of discussion! Really very informative).

Google: so many useful advice pages out there, many backed by big names. Times Money Mentor, etc.

Books: I’ve only bought one, The FT’s Guide to investing. It’s massive, thorough, clear and starts from the absolute basics with really easy to follow business scenarios. I bought mine second-hand. Maybe try the library? Not to be too cheap here, but again I always feel like money spent is offsetting interest.

I find it all quite easy to filter what is honest, and rarely smell a rat. You quickly start seeing the same names and companies time after time. I’ve also found it much more fascinating than I ever imagined it would be.

Oh and I left out friends and family. Once I asked around a bit I found people I knew who understood a lot, but just never bothered mentioning it. And when you know them well you can pass better judgment on how much you can believe them. 😁

I found Female Invest so helpful as a total newbie, just in terms of explaining investing from the very basics.

I attended an online talk, but am planning to sign up once I'm less busy and more able to act upon what I'm learning. They don't actually do investments for you, it's more guides and news.

Amboseli · 22/07/2023 16:50

I'd recommend Meaningful Money on YouTube, also James Shack and Pensioncraft.

Podcasts: Claere Barrett (spelling?), Many Happy Returns, David Buick

I've become a bit obsessed with learning about finances and investing. It's really interesting. I wish I'd started sooner, I made some easily avoided mistakes when I first started investing because I didn't educate myself properly.

It all seems to boil down to invest regularly into a cheap passive global tracker and leave it to grow for a minimum of 10 years.

Amboseli · 22/07/2023 17:10

Reddit is also really good. I've picked up lots of really useful info on the financial and FIRE subs.

SpringGreensPreens · 22/07/2023 21:23

Thanks everyone, really helpful to see this list. So far I’ve read The Simple Path to Wealth and joined something on FB about FIRE.

@SpringGreensPreens out of interest, what made you want to learn about it?
Have you just had children recently?
