I don’t have a pension and don’t know where to start

I’ve just taken a job so am employed for the first time ever at the age of 33. Up until now I have been self employed but not enough to pay into a private pension.
So I have a standard workplace pension starting this month, but really want to start investing into something that will give me a better income in retirement.
where do I start and where do I go? I have no idea at all. Thanks in advance.

Put the maximum allowed into your workplace pension, it may also have the opportunity to invest in AVCs and all contribution are from pre tax income. Invest in ISAs to use up your annual allowance, currently £20k and all gains are income and capital gains tax, free.

This is a good place to start

  • it's the government website. There's lots of info and you can get free advice.

As an aside, do you know about all the perks that you are entitled to?

For example where I work, we get a wellness allowance : which is about £300 per year.

Ask HR if you're not sure. They don't always mention everything
