Would anyone have interest in playing an investment game?

Sounds terribly boring but it's competitive and fun??? (if you're a nerd).

We start off with £100 GBP (imaginary pounds) each, to invest as we will, and you can trade as many times a day as you wish or stick with what you have for the entire month, but the value is counted on the last Friday of every month.

We would need to limit our scope to something easily trackable. I don't buy the FT, but most stocks are listed somewhere. You can invest in commodities, stocks, bonds whatever.

Does this sound like the most boring game ever? Or would people fancy their chances?

I find the markets fascinating in that I like to spot trends. INSIDER TRADING NOT ALLOWED that's to all of you working in patents at pharma companies

Winner takes all (the imaginary money).

For the sake of interest, we need to list whenever we buy or sell.

You can list your logic behind your purchase, or you can simply say what you're buying/selling with no explanation.

Ok, I'm a nerd. Lol

I should have said the last Saturday of every month as markets close on Fridays and we need to calculate it after all markets close.

OP posts:
Dalint · 19/08/2022 11:51

Would every Saturday keep it more interesting?

Every time you sell/buy though, you need to list the price of what you've bought and or sold.

If anyone wants to buy into timeshares, we can list the available ones or something?

I know this a non-starter already lol.

IABVVU.

I've always wanted to get into stocks and shares and have dabbled in the past so would love to have a go with imaginary money. I just get confused with all the platforms and where to get decent reliable info from that isn't just 'investment experts' ie knobheads taking bollocks that lose all your money for you.

Dalint · 19/08/2022 11:53

Disclaimer *prices may go up or down and your imaginary capital is at risk

BarbaraofSeville · 19/08/2022 11:54

Have you counted dealing costs and stamp duty?

As it happens, I've just bought some shares and the platform I use (www.x-o.co.uk/) has a 'fantasy portfolio' section, so you could use that to play the game, as it would presumably do all the keeping track calculating for you. I suspect that many trading sites do similar.

Danceswithkids · 19/08/2022 11:56

I would enjoy doing this. Wouldn't know where to start with organising it though.

Well have your first 100 GBP to spend as you wish!!!!!!!!!!

You currently have GBP 100.

List what you want to buy and somebody somewhere will know how to tell you how to find the prices.
Perhaps we should stick to an index such as the FTSE or should we look at incorporating the NASDAQ?

Is there anywhere that measures stocks that we could all agree on using? So that we can check pricing?

As you can see, I haven't thought this one out entirely. 😁

By mentioning timeshares, I may have been misleading. I meant, if someone wants to invest in a particular area such as oil&gas, pharma, commodities etc., we could look at linking to somewhere which lists all such stocks or something so that they can then look?

That sounds like a perfect platform and no, I hadn't thought of costs of trading.

Could we agree on that one then? Is it an app that we can all download?

OP posts:
BarbaraofSeville · 19/08/2022 12:07

I just use it on a website, no idea if there is an app.

I just use it because its a cheap execution only service offered by a reputable investment firm (Jarvis).

You now have 100 imaginary pounds!

We can outperform the best rated funds I'm sure though I may snatch some of your ideas if I like your logic 😉

OP you might want to get your post moved to the investments section, you'll find more likeminded people and the thread won't get lost in general AIBU if you get a few people joining too, it should keep running nicely.

I tried clicking on the link but it comes up with an error?

I didn't know that there was such a section. I'll ask MN now.

You can split your 100 pounds any way you want. You can hold stagnant with it in cash, you can buy 90 different shares or two shares or invest it all in gold. You can do whatever you want with it.

www.x-o.co.uk/

Yes, I can see that the link doesn't work, even though it looks like it should.

If you search for x-o jarvis in google, you should get a proper link.

BarbaraofSeville · 19/08/2022 12:16

The link in my last post works.

Dalint · 19/08/2022 12:16

I wonder would @mnhq offer a prize of an Amazon voucher for £10 to the winner the Saturday before Christmas or something? The winner being the one with the most imaginary money obviously.

Ok thanks, got the link. Will we need to create an account or where is the imaginary fantasy portfolio section? Sorry - you've just been appointed our platform representative 😂

Ok, once Barbara kicks us off with the techie side of things, we're all off!!!

OP posts:

Yes, you need to create an account, otherwise it won't be able to keep track of your fantasy portfolio.

It doesn't cost anything unless you actually trade real money. You will then see the fantasy portfolio link at the bottom of the list under accounts on the left.

Dalint · 19/08/2022 12:28

Bearing in mind that some of us know nothing about trading or whatever, you don't necessarily need to buy a whole share. You can spend £2 on a share that costs 300 pounds for a whole share so you only get a small percentage of the share.

Do we need to deposit any money to start the fantasy portfolio? I'm presuming not, but just checking as I don't want people giving bank accounts?
