When will shares go up?

Just that really, they've gone down and down for months. When do you think they'll begin to recover?

I was just about to ask this quesion as I have a buy out bond that is reaching maturity soon and I want to move it to a pension type of thing with another company but am a bit cautious to move if I have lost any money form my original amout. They usually send a yearly statement and it has made money but a very conservative amount considering how long it has been with this company. They can't seem to tell me much only that they will send out my options in 15 working days as they have to look in to it.

I put money into shares at the end of last year and wish I hadn't. They've dropped drastically and I really hope one day they'll recover

When there’s less volatility in the markets, when inflation is under control, when the Russia Ukraine situation improves. The world isn’t in a good place economically.

Rainingagaininseattle · 08/08/2022 15:37

Yes, it's a terrible time. But God knows when it'll improve. I just wondered if someone wanted to hazard a guess...

Depends what shares. My partner had retail shares and they dropped from £5 to less than 65p.

our shares in a financial institution have risen by approximately 10% per annum.

Snuggleworm · 08/08/2022 16:58

So mine are with Zurich. I moved a pension years ago to a buy out bond and they invest the money in different schemes, I think.
I never really paid attention to it tbh as it didn't go up that much but I would love to know now how much it is worth now. I will prob have to wait until they get back to me I suppose.

nannynick · 08/08/2022 21:47

My crystal ball says 18 months or so.

Nobody knows, it cannot be predicted. The market had been going up for a long time, a drop was expected.

Try to view a drop as a sale, a good time to buy. It is not good if you are at the point of retirement but if you are accumulating wealth then it is in down markets where you get more units for your money.

Be in it for the long term and don't buy individual stocks as those are what can go to zero.

RayneDance · 09/08/2022 17:40

Mine are starting to improve now.

OppsUpsSide · 09/08/2022 17:42

Mine have improved recently but I expect them to go down again and not really see much improvement for at least the next 3 years

Blaggertyjibbet · 13/08/2022 07:35

Mine just went back into positive gains! Hopefully won’t crash back down again, though it feels like it could go either way at this point. 🤔

nokitchen · 13/08/2022 07:35

Last month ours have risen

InterestQ · 15/08/2022 13:54

Mine are back up to positive gains now as well but I think it’s because I bought more the further they fell, rather than doing nothing, so it balanced the drop a bit. Every time it shone red by 5% i pounced and bought more. I’m still feeding my account now but not actually buying anything until the next drops.

Bristoluser · 25/08/2022 14:40

Are they still going up?

Keepingupappearance · 25/08/2022 14:43

Mine are back up again. I haven’t looked I the last week or so but I think I’m up more than pre Covid now

Bristoluser · 25/08/2022 16:42

That's good! I'm scared to look but maybe mine are improving too.

Bristoluser · 04/10/2022 15:30

I wonder how they are doing now?

Benjispruce4 · 13/10/2022 18:35

Badly.🙄

Wheretheskyisblue · 22/10/2022 12:02

When inflation starts to come under control. Most of drop is due to interest rate increases being higher than expected especially in the US.

Bristoluser · 26/10/2022 22:23

Hopefully things are a bit better now Sunak is in charge.

Ilovetocrochet · 26/10/2022 22:32

My retirement funds plummeted at the start of Covid, then recovered and but have dropped again since the Ukraine War and then another large loss when Truss set out her budget! I had a statement this week saying my pension fund has lost over £15,000 in two months, that’s a 15% loss!

Bristoluser · 27/10/2022 08:55

Hopefully things will improve though soon again though.

Mger2 · 01/11/2022 09:13

Remember that things are more much cheaper than when you invested. One share in most firms costs less than it did a year ago. I other words, keeping buying now while things are discounted.

There is absolutely no point in trying to guess when it will improve. Too many variables are involved and nobody knows the answer to when things will get better. But one thing is for sure - by the time you realise it will already have happened and the sale will be over.

A classic beginners error is to go ‘all in’ at a single moment. It is much better to invest a little bit every month to avoid the danger that you put in everything you’ve got at the top of the market.

Uffizi1 · 06/11/2022 04:25

I made the mistake of logging in to my account to check. The little red down arrows are why I’m awake at this time of night looking for hope! It’s a dreadful world just now.
