How to learn about investing/money management?

lurchermummy · 20/07/2022 21:54

I want to learn more about investing so I can do something with my SIPP which is sitting in cash atm. An tips for good sites/blogs etc? I'm not a total idiot but not an expert either.

I also want to improve my money management and budgeting skills in general so any tips for good sources of info would be welcome too - not those that teach you to spend hours cutting out vouchers to save 10p off a packet of ham but proper ones! Thanks.

I tend to leave all the money stuff to DH but I'm feeling very disempowered and also annoyed because there never seems to be enough.

Thanks.

DH recommends the Wake up to Money podcast - it's every day and a good variety of topics.

Podcasts - you can use a dedicated app, or some are on Spotify, Audible.
Money To The Masses
Meaningful Money

There are lots but those two will get you started with learning about investing.

Books:
The Simple Path To Wealth by JL Collins - this is a book from a USA based author, which is a more concise version of his Stocks Series blog posts. Good for learning about investing globally, not stock picking.
The Meaningful Money Handbook by Pete Matthew - this is from a UK author, and has sections on budgeting, insurance and beginner investing (such as talking about assets, funds, platforms).

Once you start reading books and listening to podcasts you will start to go down the rabbit hole and find things that interest you. Such as the Pension Craft YouTube channel. That is great but is like jumping in the deep end for a beginner.

That Mint Podcast - weird name I know but it is hosted by two women who have great banter between them.

MamaFurFur on YouTube - that's a good one for all sorts of things about money management.

Procrastination is the biggest enemy.

Get something open now.
You can always move it later when you're more confident.
Many use Hargreaves and landsown to get going because it's got a good app.

Agree that procrastination is your biggest enemy. Second the Meaningful Money Podcast, website, you tube channel and book (Meaningful Money Handbook by Pete Matthew - he's the man behind all this). He says something about this - basically stop dithering and just put your money into a fund.

He does a good youtube video about pensions vs ISA and says that all most people need to invest, after paying off bad (ie non mortgage) debt and saving up an emergency fund is to get an ISA for any money you might need before retirement and a pension for after. Both can just be a passive fund from somewhere like Vanguard.

Unless you have hundreds of thousands of pounds, or complicated circumstances, you don't really need anything else and this is an IFA talking.

Also look at the personal finance flow chart to see what you need to think about in what order and where you are with it all

Following as I’m in a similar situation.
(Not quite answering your question but might be of interest:) the Hidden Brain podcast had a few well researched episodes on the psychology of money recently.

I love Wake up to Money podcast, learned a lot from it in terms of money spending. As for investing I started to read articles from one project of investors, quite extensive and written in easy language, which is a relief for a newbie like me
