What S&S platform for good returns?

Hello,

I often read on here posters saying they are getting 15% plus returns on their ISAs. How? I have 2 Vanguard Life Strategy funds (80% & 100%) & the performance isn't great. What am I missing?

How long have they had them compared to you ?
Mine have absolutely tanked
I haven't had them very long, maybe a year
I've gone from 9% to 0.6 in the space of a few months

swirlsy · 20/02/2022 09:59

About a year, think the highest was 10% & now down 5%.
Obviously we are going into a trickle economic time but I was pondering this a few months ago. Some posters talk about 25% returns!

I don't know how long posters have had them but they've said this yr my returns are etc.

I think the people with the good returns have had them for years
I know everyone says you have to ride it out but I am wondering if I've made a mistake

It’s time in the market, I have had LifeStrategy funds for a while and have excellent returns overall.

None is guaranteed- higher risk for higher return. And past performance sadly no guarantee of future

swirlsy · 20/02/2022 10:32

I'm happy to leave cash there for 20 years & understand there are fluctuations.

how does it work @PiffleWiffleWoozle if you have excellent returns is it because they were so good years ago that bad performance now is cancelled out?

@fedup078 I'm not sure what other option I have. I left uni against a backdrop of low interest rates so never been able to make money work for me. The last few years I finally have good savings for long term & still can't do it. Annoying!

I feel like I'm always late to the party with this things

fedup078 · 20/02/2022 10:34

these things*

Yes, overall increase over the whole investment period is high even though very recently the value has gone down. I pay in a bit each month so am buying at a lower price when it goes down.

I can’t time the market or pick the perfect fund - if I could I would be a billionaire! So I go with diversified funds and patience.

swirlsy · 20/02/2022 10:43

i do out money in each month as I read that's better.

@fedup078 I'm an millennial unfortunately so missed the boat on many things 😆

It is unsettling times most of us are going to feel this will be a poor year for returns

Porfre · 20/02/2022 10:59

If tha values are low, then it means now would be a good times to buy.

I bought loads on the dip in March 2020 and the values bounced back. So if the market is choppy then it would be a good time to be into the funds.

I got some in s and p 500, all world fund etc. And some in the life strategy one.

Porfre · 20/02/2022 11:02

I haven't checked the value in a while but it's a longterm investment. So maybe check every few months.

But they were doing ok.

Winebottle · 20/02/2022 12:48

Performance will vary between funds. Mine have done relatively well this year because I'm underweight the US but they would have done relatively badly over the last 5 years when the US has outperformed the rest of the world.

Nobody can predict the future. Everyone has just as much chance of being wrong as right so looking at returns over a short period doesn't tell you a lot. Equity investments can easily go up 25% or down 25% in a given year but nobody can make 25% over a period of 10 years.

Tbh I just wanted to not lose money as sitting in my back account is pointless. It's only when I've seen posts on MNs talking about such returns that I questioned if I was doing something wrong.
