Hello, I am due to come into some money and I would like to use it to buy a bigger home probably this year some time. Everything I have read says that investing is only for 5 years plus because the value can go down... is there anyone on here who would risk investing it say for 6 months? The reason I am tempted is that the amount we have is a bit short of the home we would like. I cant save any more each month or get a second job to raise the money.... how much could my assets go down by if things go pear shaped?! Would anyone risk it? Is it essentially gambling? I already have a lifetime isa for retirement purposes as I'm not a FTB. thanks a lot.

I think you really should speak to a financial advisor about this. Although the advice on here is generally good you really should rely on somebody who's qualified to talk to you about it.

Short term money needs to go somewhere secure and low risk.

Only put money in stocks for minimum of 5 years is the general advice

I had £50k that I needed to keep for a year before a house purchase and put it into premium bonds as bank savings interest rate was so poor

Maybe I could have done more with it

From everything I've read and understand investing for this length of time is a really bad idea. You could invest your money and find that at the exact point when you need it you are in a dip - and you could even have less than you invested. Premium bonds? You probably won't win but you never know - and it's super safe.

I think I will go with the premium bonds. I was just thinking that a v low risk vanguard lifestrategy one might be ok, but I suppose if it's that low risk ot might not make much money and I'd have to pay charges on it so probably pointless.
