Balance Transfers - can this work?

I am having some major work done in the house, starting next week. I had to spend a mahoosive amount of money unexpectedly early this week, leaving me short - I do have an investment I could call on, but I don't want to. I have a couple of credit cards but I always pay them off at the end of the month.
I have been looking at a new credit card with one of my existing banks. They have indicated (online) that I can have credit up to about 7.000. I would want to use this as a transfer, because that way I can have interest free for 20 months.
So - do I apply now, have the new card in place and put the new purchase on an old card, then transfer it? Or do I put the new purchase on one of my existing cards, apply for a new card and then effect the transfer? Does it matter?
I've never done this before and I'm a bit reluctant to go and ask the bank direct in case it really does matter and I mess up my chances of getting a new card.

Apply first
Spend on old card after you have received the new one.
Transfer.
