Hi all,

I use HL and the fees are becoming too expensive. Can anyone please recommend a platform that's user friendly, has an app with cheaper trading fees, please?

Am interested in this area as well...am a complete beginner and was wandering what you read as sources of knowledge other than the paper...websites or magazines?

I've just started using Trading 212. It's free and regulated by the FCA. if you sign up using my link, we would both get a free share.

Do you want to get a free stock share worth up to ‎£ 100?

Create a Trading 212 Invest account and use promo code:

GbosKslz

We will both get a free share!

Get the app using this link: www.trading212.com/invite/GbosKslz

(Apologise if links are not allowed).

@grumpypug I'm looking at this too. Is trading212 for very short term trading or can you hold them for as long as you like? I have also just opened a stocks and shares ISA - can I trade under the 212 ISA if I haven't used all my allowance?

thanks

grumpypug · 28/10/2020 12:16

@indieschoolfinito they have 3 areas, CFD (which I haven't entered as I don't understand it and been warned off unless you know what you're doing) invest, which is what I'm using at the minute. I've got some investments which I'm holding long term and some which I'm trading quickly and there's an ISA option, too.

indieschool2000 · 28/10/2020 12:27

thanks @grumpypug still having a play with it but will use your link if I join!

grumpypug · 28/10/2020 12:45

Thanks @indieschoolfinito. I'm just learning myself but thought the banks interest rates are so low at the minute, why not! I used the practise account for a while before using real money.

@grumpypug

Thanks, but I don't trust that company and will not be joining.

Also interested in this as have been using HL for some time. I looked at Aj Bell and Vanguard. Aj Bell has lower headline fee of 0.25% vs 0.45% but has costs for trades and dividend reinvestment and even monthly saving. Once I factored those in, I was pretty much back where I started with HL.

I considered vanguard for junior isas but the minimum monthly amt is £100 and I want to do £50 for each child.

I think I may have looked at others but they seem to have a lot more ‘hidden’ fees. Still open to moving if anyone has any good ideas!

HerPennyPotential · 04/12/2020 22:50

I use Freetrade, which is similar to Trading212. but if you aren't looking to invest in individual stocks, then maybe go for Vanguard UK? They have the cheapest fees around and i have my stocks and shares isa with them which has done well so far.

everyonebutme · 23/12/2020 08:40

I use both Freetrade and Trading212. Freetrade is much more user friendly I feel but Trading212 has more functionality (their ISA is free too). If anyone wants a referral code to receive a free share (I would get one too), please message me. Both allow you to purchase shares commission free.

lboogy · 28/12/2020 18:41

How much are HL really? I hold around 13k +3k in a junior isa with them. Half in an isa half in a siip. I think I'm paying less than £2 a month. Sounds like a lot but their app is easy to use and I can't see why I'd switch. I also hold a similar amount with AJ bell but only an ISA. Fees again monthly are less than £2.

The main charges for both seem to be the cost of trading individual stocks. Each charge around £10 per trade if I recall correctly but I remember aj bell was cheaper.

Am I missing something and paying more than I think I'm paying?

lboogy · 28/12/2020 18:42

I also should add that the cost to trade their recommended funds are free too

Hoppinggreen · 29/12/2020 13:00

We recently did a review and decided to stick with HL

VictoriaClaire28 · 17/01/2021 22:17

If it is for mainly trading I can recommend Degiro as having the cheapest fees I could find. £1.89 for share transactions on LSE, and £0.44 on NASDAQ and NYSE!

This link will get you £20 in fee reimbursement too if you want to try it out:

Mumblechum0 · 18/01/2021 03:27

My DS is a self employed derivatives trader and uses Lightspeed, as their fees work out lower than most.

PenguinsMatter · 18/01/2021 21:41

I have started using Trading212 and my friend does as well. She is doing really well but has been doing it for about 8 months. There is no commission charged and we both invest under the stocks and shares isa. I have only just started but have some free shares from signing up from her link and then a couple of friends signed up from my link. There is no obligation to invest after you receive your free share. You can just sell it but I wanted to invest some extra money so I am trying it.

Please feel free to use my link below for your free share:
