How to protect 60k inheritance?

I lost my dad when I was a child and I'm finally coming to the age where I can retrieve it (after the family house is sold).

I've been with DP for a couple of years and we're thinking of moving in together.

Now, we're not married (and I don't want to unless I can secure down this money). But also I'll be moving two hours away from 'home' - if I buy in his area and if we split up I don't particularly want to be tied down to that area. Also, we can't save for our own place as I'm not entitled to first time buyer - right now we're thinking of renting but he's not particularly happy as he's got enough for half a first time buyer deposit.

I'm not sure what I'm asking but basically how can I invest in a property and make sure he's not able to have any of my dad's money? We're going to try renting first just to confirm we can actually live together.

Can you not put down the same amount of deposit on a joint home, and invest the rest in your own name?

If you do, unfortunately, split then your home can be sold and the proceeds split as you have both contributed.

You have a declaration of trust which sets out the ownership and it needs to include a provision that it can only be altered in writing. Don't marry without a pre-nup.
