Tax relief on children's pensions

Is it possible to claim 40% tax relief on contributions into a child's pension, if the parent is a higher rate tax payer? Many thanks

No.

You (or anyone else for that matter) pay and the pension claims basic rate tax back on the child’s behalf

Ah thank you. So it's not possible for the pension to claim back higher rate?

No, absolutely not.

Only personal pension contributions offset higher rate tax. It’s an offset, not a reclaim, so a different mechanism.

Thanks so much for clearing that up for us

Unless the child is a higher rate tax payer, presumably.

Unless the child is a higher rate tax payer, presumably true enough, but that’s not was being asked.
