Should I start a Pension?

I am early forties and have no pension.

I have a child with Autism which means I haven't worked for a long time and am unlikely to for some time as his needs are great.

I have got savings and wonder if I should be putting this money into a pension instead?

The biggest incentive to pay into a pension is that you can reclaim the income tax, so effectively make a bigger contribution. If you're not earning enough to pay income tax, the fact that you wouldn't be able to access the money in an emergency might mean that you would be better looking at something like an ISA instead. There is no special benefit to a pension - you can invest directly in similar products without paying the fees. When you say you have savings, are these in cash? You could consider putting some into an ISA an buying funds to try and increase the return (this is what your pension would do).
