Sedation for ER - conscious or deep?

Hello all,

I am very nervous about the egg retrieval and am currently choosing between clinics. It seems some offer nurse led sedation which is light/ conscious sedation with midazolam and alfentanyl and some offer deep sedation with midazolam, alfentanyl and propofol.

I don’t like the thought of being out of control and put under but on the other hand it might be good if I’m very nervous to have more sedation so I’m not awake during the procedure.

Can anyone please give me any insights into which might be better based on their experience please?

Yes fully asleep, you don’t feel yourself drift off or anything it was pretty instant. Next memory was telling the staff how wonderful they were as I was coming around in bed 😂

Just to say also - I had to go home alone as my DH was a witness at a wedding that morning. I was completely fine getting into a taxi and didn’t need to nap that afternoon. It wore off quickly

I had deep sedation at both clinics where I had egg retrieval and would not have accepted the conscious sedation method.

It was relaxing as far as it could be as part of IVF process. It juts felt like a nice, quick nap, and I was fine to get on with my day after a couple of hours (although they advised rest, but I was able to work from home and go for lunch after an early morning egg retrieval).

I had deep sedation and was nervous beforehand but ended up quite enjoying my procedure as strange as that sounds. I’d have no qualms about doing it again. Dropped into a deep snooze about 10 seconds after the sedation was inserted and woke up 20 mins later to a much wanted cup of tea.

To add I went out for coffee late afternoon and didn’t have any pain

Yes I did go to sleep I was definitely out of it but not like a general anesthetic. I don't remember that I was still sometimes chatting/joining in their conversation. It was all fine from my experience 😊
