Hi Mumsnet community. I’m looking for some advice. I recently had a missed miscarriage which has taken months to resolve and recover from. I just had my AMH tested and it’s 5.3 pmol/L. I’m 39 so time is not on my side but for various reasons my husband and I weren’t in a position to TTC until my late 30s. Is it sensible to go straight to trying IVF to increase our chances? I became pregnant within 6 months of trying and I’d like to try again without assistance initially but very aware that I’ll be 40 at the end of this year and time just seems to be running away with us. Does anyone else have experience of a similar situation?

I think if you fell pregnant reasonably quickly already then I dont see why it wouldnt happen again. Im very sorry for loss and the recovery time. Its very hard to go through something like that and then continuously be reminded of what your going through when the body isnt healing in a timely manner. I would start trying if your ready and give yourself 6 months, if nothing has happened in that 6 month time frame then id go on to have further investigations.

Thanks so much for your kind reply @Miraclemuma03. That’s interesting as I was bracing myself for replies along the lines of “all hope is lost and you’re too old”! One doctor I saw during the miscarriage was pushing for me to do IVF now as apparently people who are 40+ respond less well but it’s such a huge thing to undertake physically.

@EllaSW thats not always the case. There are a few woman on MN who are over 40+ and have fallen pregnant naturally. It just all comes down to your eggs really and your partners sperm. But yes with age it can be harder to have success. You could just find yourself a fertility specialist and just discuss your options, sometimes there is a bit of a wait time before getting in so you could try naturally while waiting for appointments and further testing, that way if not successful your already moving to plan B .
