Transfer one or two embryos?

Hi, I've had two failed FETs with a top quality and an average quality embryo. I have two left in the freezer - 4BC and 3BC. My consultant is recommending to transfer two, which will very slightly increase the odds of success, but will save me time and money in case I need to move forward with a new egg collection (I'm almost 36). We have better chances of success if we transfer them one at a time and I am keen to avoid multiple pregnancy as I don't think my body can cope with that (I had a high risk pregnancy previously). But it's tempting to try two.

It would really help me to hear your experiences with transferring one or two embryos of similar grade.🙏

Personally would never transfer 2.

We did 4 failed IUIs and 2 egg collections (1 failed fresh trasnfer and 1 FET chemical pregnancy) before success.

My 2nd egg collection we got 3 embryos. The first is my daughter. The second is my son born 2 years later. If we had transferred 2 embryos, we could have had a multiple birth.

I personally think potential risks to you and your potential childrens lives, outweigh the reduced financial burden and wish to have a prengnacy sooner. Many multiple births are fine but they do come with risks, and I never felt right about the idea of voluntarily increasing my liklihood of that happening.

Also, the embryo graded for my children was lower than the grading for my unsuccessful transfers, so try not to assume that grading is everything :)

You need to go with what feels right for you. It never felt right for me.

@2mumlife Thank you very much for sharing your story. Transferring two never felt right for me but after speaking with my consultant I am very confused and really don't know what to do.

I transferred two - have twins. I love them deeply, grateful for their lives but one at time is better for you and baby.

Alternative is a few grand and a few months for additional transfer. I’d choose two transfers.

@FET2026 Thank you! Were your embies also average quality and untested?

Yes - I haven’t ever done PGTA testing.

And yes not great grades

The cynic in me would remind you that consultants are also looking at thier success rates 🙄so I would go with what you feel comfortable with. I was tempted at one stage, it is tempting sure

I've not been in this situation but if your gut tells you not to transfer two I would go with that instinct. My instinct is telling me the same thing, although at the moment two embryos isn't on the table anyway from our clinic so that helps.

@2mumlife I thought about this too.. But it would only affect their "per transfer" stats, rather than "per embryo transferred". I think the main argument was that I'm not getting any younger and should proceed with new egg collection asap. However, I am not there mentally, as I haven't given up on the last two embies just yet (though my expectations are low after the failures).

@Waitingforday6 Thank you, yes, it needs to be our decision, as we will be living with the consequences. Good that your clinic is reasonable and not planting seeds of doubt!

I'm shocked that your clinic recommends transferring 2. I looked at this when having a fet and the odds of 2 wasn't much higher than 1 yet risks so much higher. On balance I couldn't see an argument for it.

Azahar8 · 30/01/2026 13:02

@Sara237 They normally don't, which makes me feel like my embryos are hopeless :(

@Azahar8 They aren’t hopeless at all! Both my success transfers were untested B grade embryos :)

@2mumlife Thank you 🙏
