Hycosy - why is partner needed to be there?

Hiya, I have an appointment at Aberdeen for a hycosy and wondering if anyone has done it without their partner being present?

The letter says my partner needs to attend also but we have zero childcare options and it says no children allowed.

Many thanks

Hi, I wasn't told to bring my husband (private clinic) but they offered to do the IVF consultation straight after so maybe that's why? Still strange to include it in your appointment letter though.

You might not be able to drive after - some people find it more painful than others, perhaps that's it?

I had a hycosy and they didn't require anyone there, not sure why your partner would need to be there.

Assume this relates to journey home afterwards. Call up and ask if you can sign a waiver to discharge yourself/ just get a taxi/ if they've made a mistake.

I've had a HyCoSy by myself. I did feel quite faint during the procedure, but I'm prone to fainting when they pass anything through my cervix. I just had to sit for a bit after and drove myself home fine (over 30mins away).

I had a hysterosalpingogram and my partner had to work. He's had to be at so many appointments this felt like one we really didn't need to bother having him at!

He dropped me off, then went to work and I got a Uber to drive me the hour home. I got the whole backseat of a Lexus estate to myself and it was honestly the relaxing comfort I needed - one of the best rides of my life 😂

Mine wasn’t. Why would they need to be ? I don’t understand that. Some people don’t have partners

I thought it was strange also! I've since rang them and they are being really insistent of my partner still being there as they said it can be a very painful procedure and if my partner isn't available then another adult needs to be waiting to drive me home?

So I'm now panicking it's going to be really painful 😅... I don't feel any discomfort or pain during smears, is it really that painful?

For me it was like a prolonged smear and the care assistant held my hand and I had no pain after . I guess you need to follow their guidabce though if that is their policy

MocktailMe · 02/02/2026 19:12

I did find it painful and was told not to drive myself home. Also as they can on occasion need to give you a relaxant and that's not suitable if driving.

The painful part for me was the dye going round, not the speculum as such.

rockinrobins · 03/02/2026 07:31

@Tifsy I guess it's just your clinic's policy by the sound of it. I had one and it was a little uncomfortable but fine, I certainly didn't need to be driven home after.

Try not to worry about it being painful - it might be a little but its like period pains. I was really anxious about mine and got myself into a bit of a state. I wouldn't say it's painless but it wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be.

Can you tell them you've no one who can come and you've booked a taxi for the journey home, and give them your partner's number/ tell them he's on standby in case he's really needed but can't come in?

It seems a bit OTT to require someone to wait for you .

Uncomfortable but not painful
