IVF and flu

Hi everyone

We are about to start our next IVF cycle and my husband has come down with the flu and had a fever. I've read that this can impact sperm quality, particularly DNA fragmentation. He usually has very good sperm quality.

Has anyone had any experience with flu/fever and IVF?

I'm worried it could affect our chances, but also not keen to wait another 3 months which is how long it takes for new sperm to be generated!

Did he get on top of the fever reasonably quickly? I think if he is generally usually well and usually has good sperm quality then I dont think having a flu will impact too much.

@Miraclemuma03 he's had a fever on and off for 2 days, ranging from 38-39.5 degrees. He doesn't feel too bad otherwise and is generally usually well and has 'excellent' sperm quality.

It's really hard to know what to do or how much it might impact it!

I think it will be in three months time that the sperm is affected. When we saw a urologist he said it's really hard to tell what is going on when sperm quality fluctuates as you have to look back three months and most people can't remember if they were ill/living a bit of an unhealthy lifestyle etc. That being said, worth discussing with your clinic/embryologist and seeing what they think.

@FancyGoose thank you. Clinic just said they would only delay for 3 months if it was COVID. Speaking to the embryologist early next week so hopefully that helps with our decision. I think it's just a guessing game really!

Just to feed back, we went ahead. Egg collection was just about 3 weeks after fever but it didn't seem to have any impact on outcome. We had exactly the same results as our first round. The clinic recommended daily ejaculation in the week leading up to it so maybe that helped. He also had good sperm as a starting point. How that helps anyone going through the same decision!
