Was the GP wrong?

Hello everyone. Recently I went to see my GP because I have not been able to conceive for the past year. She was a trainee and unfortunately she was not very helpful at explaining anything and she was all confused running around etc. so I didn’t have the best experience. What’s more is that she said we are going to do a Lh/Fsh/Estradiol test on day 2-5 of cycle, but the blood test date is on day 11 of my cycle, but when I said does my cycle not start today (1st day of period, had my period that day) she said “no, your cycle starts when your period ends” which as for as I know it is not true?

Also she wanted to test me for sti such as chlamydia/gonorrhea and instead of giving me a swap she gave me a urine test. But when you look at this online it says urine sample is not %100 correct always. What am I supposed to do? Go and see different GP? Thank you for your help!

Yes I’d request someone else as there are clearly some gaps in her knowledge and your results won’t be accurate. Get used to advocating for yourself in this process it’s really important that you do.

Yeh, you’re cycle starts on day 1 is the day your bleed comes on. Also every time I have been asked to do the sti it was with a swab. You should also ask for was thyroid check at your GP

Cycle day 1 is day of full flow period not the spotting leading up to full flow. The new doctor is an idiot and obviously doesnt understand basic female knowledge. Id say definitely see a new gp and just get a referal to see a fertility specialist and get them to run some basic fertility testing, they are better equipped to read the results where as a gp is not..

Thank you so much for replying, really appreciate it. I’ve been in the UK for 2 years but this was my first time visiting a GP so I don’t understand the system fully. So should I call the surgery and ask for a new appointment with a different GP? What would you suggest?

Yeh I would just call and say I would like to book an appointment as I would like a 2nd opinion, you are well within your rights to have a 2nd opinion within medical care and be checked over by another doc for any reason ! Good luck , have you actually had any miscarriages ? If you have had 3 you can be referred to the reacurrent miscarriage clinic which are based in hospitals not GP office and they will do lots of tests fertility related , more than GP can do, can you even ask GP to refer you to a fertility specialist anyways ? No harm in asking , but it will depend on your age , how long youv been TTC etc good luck

Either that, if you have the money , go private to a fertility clinic, but they are pricey.

For Chlamydia/gonnorea I had a urine test. I double checked and apparently that's the normal testing method (also worth noting no test is 100% accurate). I don't think this is a huge deal, especially if they're just ruling it out.

You're right about cycles - day 1 is day 1 of your period. It's a bit shocking a GP doesn't know this! I'd definitely call back.

Yes, call the clinic and ask to see another gp. You can even report the other gp for miss information
