How painful is the hycosy test?

I have a hycosy test on Friday and I’m working myself up about it. I’ve ready lots of different stories online and from what I have summarized is that if your tubes are blocked then it’s agony!

I have endometriosis and have been trying for ages with no luck (apart from 2 chemicals and an ectopic) I’m convinced one of my tubes is blocked.

I am going to take naproxen and cocodomol beforehand. Is it worse than a coil insertion? That hurt but was manageable.

I didn’t have a hycosy I had a sis which is similar. I didn’t find it any worse than a cervical smear test. Uncomfortable but bearable. The staff were very supportive and let me squeeze their hands! I got pregnant same cycle. Consultant told me the test does cause an increase in pregnancies in subfertile people and they have no idea why. I did lose that pregnancy for completely unrelated reasons. Good luck.

I've had 3 hycosys/saline scans and found them uncomfortable rather than painful, I do think it can vary a little person to person and I'd say rake some pain killers, but I found it just a bit cramps when catheter went in/a couple of other moments hur quite briefly. Good luck!

Thank you for your replies both of your experiences sound much better than what I’ve read online. The nurse actually said don’t google it but then of course it was the first thing I did.

I didn't even notice when they did mine, and I have endometriosis too. I did take co-codamol beforehand though and my tubes weren't blocked. I imagine it would be different if they were but just wanted to reassure you that not everyone has a terrible time!

My tubes weren't blocked - I found the setup part uncomfortable (in the same way a smear is uncomfortable) and then when they put in the dye I had sharp cramping for a minute or so. Then had some mild cramping for a few hours afterwards, but no worse than my period cramps (which I count as minor). I took some painkillers around 40min beforehand.

Mine was pretty uncomfortable but I wouldn't say painful as such. The speculum was the worst bit for me but my tubes weren't blocked.

I thought it was worse than a smear but I don't generally have a problem with smears

I thought I would update in case anyone found this thread later down the line (I’ve read everything mentioning hycosy in the run up to it!).

I had my test today and catheter going in was a sharp pain but completely manageable. Dye going in I didn’t even feel on the right hand side, he moved to the left and that hurt, more of a surprising period cramp. I think there was a blockage there. He didn’t seem concerned about it and said he didn’t have a great view of it but he was sure it was fine as at least ones working. I wouldn’t be skipping back but I would definitely not be as nervous if I needed another one.
