Thin Lining

Hi all,

After 18 months TTC and two miscarriages I have been referred for initial fertility tests. I had my ultrasound results back today and I’m a bit confused…

They measured my uterine lining at 6mm and I was about to ovulate. As far as I am aware, that is considered too thin for implantation? The doctor has said on his notes ‘no action required’ so I am guessing I am going to have to push for them to help with this.

They also noted that I had a ‘follicle’ measuring 38mm x 31mm which caused an extremely large left ovary (45cc). Again from what I have read this would be considered a cyst rather than a follicle? They have specifically wrote on the notes ‘no cysts present’ so again confusing! I know cysts are common and I often have them but just wondering if this means I won’t have ovulated this cycle!

I am wondering if anyone can shed some light because Dr Google is giving such mixed responses.

Thank you in advance! X

Depending on where you are in your cycle, 6mm can be fine for lining. More than 7mm is recommended before embryo transfer but I went from 6.7 to 8.6mm in a few days so it all can change quite quickly with the hormones!
No idea on the cyst/follicle, so hopefully someone more knowledgeable will be along soon.
Sorry you find yourself here and good luck with your next steps xxx

Oh that is reassuring to know, thank you. I was scanned on my peak LH day so I think ovulation was imminent… I am not sure if the lining carries on getting thicker after ovulation but it is something I can ask them I suppose.

Thank you, sorry you are here too and I really appreciate you replying xxx

No worries and sorry I don't know the answers. I do think it might be worth emailing the clinic/doctor so you can get the informed medical opinion.
It's very hard not to obsess about each and every detail. If it makes you feel better, I was asking the IVF consultant if it was ok my follicles had grown and were now over the trigger line on the chart (even though she had already said she was happy and in hindsight that is what we all want!). Sounds insane, but completely normal.
Infertility is so hard both physically and emotionally and there's so much misinformation, please take care of yourself and do post on here if you need support xxx

No I really appreciate it, I wasn’t sure i’d get a response at all but I’m glad it’s not just me that obsesses over these little things! I feel like no question is a stupid question because most of us are so in the dark with this stuff. It sounds like you are in good hands.

It is so hard, and I feel for anyone on this page. You take care of yourself too xxx

Your lining is too thin for where you are in your cycle from my understanding it should be above 7mm by the time your ready to ovulate and it carries on thickening until an embryo implants so I'd say you need progesterone or something else to help thicken your lining. That could be the cause of miscarriage if you lining isnt thick enough. Also follicles of that size are well over mature and you very likely did not ovulate and instead quite possibly had formed cysts.. id say you might need a hand with lining and to ovulate. Have you already spoke to a fertility specialist.

Thank you so much for replying I really appreciate it. I haven’t spoken to a fertility specialist yet, but it is my next step. I have had blood tests which I’m waiting on the results for and my DH is also having a SA on Friday, but after the scan I suspect I need some help as you have said.
I have suspected my lining is thin after years of the mirena coil and then a D&C after the miscarriage. I am on the waiting list for a gynaecologist but I think I will go private if I haven’t heard soon.

I also thought the follicle was over mature and must be a cyst instead, so I’m really confused why they have marked it as a follicle on my scan and said I have no cysts!

If you do end up doing IVF, they'll keep a close eye on your lining and there's plenty of meds you can take to give it a boost if needed. I had several scans (before getting into fertility treatment proper) where my lining was under 5 post ovulation, I did find that this was noted as thin but nothing suggested, until a private doctor I saw thought I had adhesions as a result of d&c surgery - I did, and had hysteroscopies to remove the adhesions and scarring tissue which I'm sure was the reason we weren't conceiving again after a loss.

When I did IVF my lining was still on the thinner side, I was put on a heap of oestrogen which does the trick for most people but not me, I went back on IVF stims to grow my own follicles to produce hormones to boost my lining which worked. Lots of options. Also, my Dr was much more fussed about lining looking right than thickness - in my successful transfer cycle they triggered me for transfer with a lining of under 7mm, I'm now 30 weeks with that embryo transfer

Thank you so much for sharing your experience, it is reassuring there are things that can be done to help. I am also wondering if the D&C has done some damage…

I have spoken to my DH and we are going to get an appointment with a fertility clinic in the new year once all of our tests have come back and hopefully they can help 🤞

Massive congratulations and so pleased it all worked out for you xx
