AMH and AFC discrepancies

Hi all,

Can someone help shine a light on my results for me. I'm having a mild panic about it and don't know what to do :(. I'm due to start IVF very soon and just wondered if anyone could help explain why my AMH level is 10.6pmol but my AFC was 27. Is 10.6 low for age 33? They've said it's normal but when I look on Google it all feels so scary and doom and gloom. My AFC was way higher, so it makes no sense.

I'd be so grateful for some help here.

Best wishes xx

Hi, I found this article which might reassure you https://rbej.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.1186/s12958-019-0497-4
I don't think 10.6 is that low but if it doesn't match your AFC it could either just be one of those things and AFC is more reliable (as per the article) or you might be vitamin D deficient? I'd get vitamin D checked anyway before IVF (don't just take a supplement on the off chance it's the reason for the lower AMH in relation to AFC). Biotin also interferes with AMH blood test results so maybe check they aren't in any of the supplements you might be taking. Good luck!! 😊

Discordance between antral follicle counts and anti-Müllerian hormone levels in women undergoing in vitro fertilization - Reproductive Biology and Endocrinology

Background In general, anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) is positively associated with antral follicle count (AFC). However, there is often discordance between the AMH level and AFC in clinical practice. In cases of discordance, which indicator should be ch...

Thank you so much for sending me that article! It's so confusing really and they don't really explain much. My mistake for googling really. My Vit D is all okay but might be worth repeating before starting. Thank you :)

All that matters if what you get on the day of egg collection.

My AFC was 2 and AMH 1.9 (yikes) yet managed 7 eggs, 3 of which were good quality blasts

AMH falls before AFC, it's like what's waiting in the store cupboard behind the curtain of the visible follicles.

But they can just be discordant. My AMH is 12.5 but I get 20-25 eggs.

I think it's random and quite common for the two to seem to contradict each other. My AMH is high but my follicle count is comparatively low, e.g. in theory if it matched my AMH it should be higher. It also seems like both of these vary depending on when you had it done -- sometimes AMH rises and is higher in a later test. There's a lot of natural variability and you won't know until you do an IVF round how you respond. Also be aware that your AFC may not correspond to eggs retrieved, you may get a lot less or more eggs retrieved than your AFC that month.
