Polyp removal before FET

Hi ladies,

I need some advice please. I've just been through an ivf cycle. During stims they noticed a 3mm shadow what they think is a polyp caused by the stims.

Our consultant thinks it'd be sensible to remove even a 3mm polyp before a FET. His logic is to ensure the uterine environment is perfect. I am 50 50 as obviously a polypectomey has its on risks not to mention having anaesthetic again.

One of the scanners thought it'd just go away with my bleed as its so small but our consultant said polyps don't go away.

What would you do? We have mfi. I am planning on having another transvaginal scan soon to see if it's still there. Can't bring myself to do a 3d sis again either it's so painful.

Thanks

How many embryos do you have frozen? It shouldn't really make a difference as each one is so so precious but if you have multiple you could see how a transfer goes first time round? I would say another scan is a good idea and it might not be a polyp after all. My clinic seem to think even 10-15mm is fine and that 70% of polyps come back (I think... don't quote me on that) but I try to approach it this way whenever I am unsure. If things go wrong would I prefer that they go wrong and I followed Doctor's advice or they go wrong and I followed my own advice 😁 but I completely get not wanting more procedures. Would you have to go private for the removal?

Hi. We have 4 embryos but I don't want to do another ec. I am 37 and ideally would be nice to have two kids. That's quite interesting what your clinic says. So does that mean they would do a transfer say if someone had a 9mm polyp? Mines only 3mm. Yeh we are private so would get it removed privately. It's so frustrating as when I've tried to do my own research online it varies so much whether a consultant would request its removal or not. I think ours tend to air on the side of caution. Have you had a transfer with a polyp?

I'll check my notes when I get home but I'm pretty sure they said up to around 15mm the research says no negative impact although I have since googled around a bit and found more research on 10mm and above so either way you are below that). I haven't had a transfer yet just due to freeze all cycle and timings and I am thinking of going ahead as is (they are happy to) and if it's unsuccessful I might consider a private removal. But it does play on my mind of course and I would hate to think I 'sacrificed' one of our precious frosties but equally if the experts say it's fine? And as you say each procedure carries risks so God forbid we damage our womb removing something that didn't need removing. Ahhh so difficult!!!!! You could always get a second opinion following the next scan?

I had a hysteroscopy/ polypectomy to remove a polyp before transfer. Unfortunately I can’t remember what size it was (I think less than 10mm) but my consultant strongly recommended having it removed. In my case we’d only got one usable embryo from each of the two first egg collections so it made sense to do everything possible to maximise the chances of it working.

@CharlotteYorkMacDougal I hope the transfer went well! Do you know whether the polyp came back? And was it done via sedation or general? Sorry about all the questions 😁

CharlotteYorkMacDougal · 12/09/2025 13:28

No problem! Thank you, the transfer was successful. The hysteroscopy was done under general anaesthetic (which is apparently standard at my (private) clinic). I know for a fact that the polyp did not come back as I had another hysteroscopy before my second transfer two years later (due to patchy lining) and the consultant confirmed there were no polyps that time.

Ah that's great @CharlotteYorkMacDougal, glad to hear it was successful!!

It's so difficult isn't it! Good luck with your transfer. We've decided to have the scan first and then see how we feel. If it's gone hooray but if not I guess if it's still only 3mm we might leave it but if it's grown then I'll probably have it removed first. If we transfer without removing and it doesn't work then for the next one I'll be removing it and having some other tests done

Hi. Congrats on your success! We've decided to have the scan and take it from there. If I am lucky maybe it's gone. If not then we'll see I guess. If it was bigger it would be an easy decision to just remove it but 3mm is tiny.

Thank you! I think that's a wise move! I actually messaged the clinic to double-check and will see what they suggest. Good luck for your transfer too!! I'll keep you posted if I make a decision 😁
