IVF to start - worst timing

We’re due to start IVF in the next few months. Following my tracking app (which is always accurate), day 21 - so when I should be getting decapeptyl injection - is our wedding day. So that can’t happen.

App says the period that follows wedding will basically be the entire length of our honeymoon. In any other circumstances, I would ask GP for pills to postpone period. However, this will then affect timings of IVF. I’m 42 early next year so I only have time for two rounds of IVF as it is. By messing about with cycle, I might only have time for one round.

But… IVF might not work anyway and I really don’t want my period to ruin honeymoon.

Any advice?

Can you postpone the honeymoon? Have it at a later stage?

What are the exact months you expect to be doing IVF? Have you already been told long protocol is better for you than short? Some clinics prefer not to suppress the ovaries of those over 40.

While it's definitely advisable to do all of this sooner rather than later, a delay of a month to allow you to enjoy your wedding and honeymoon will not make any difference. You don't want to potentially be experiencing a low mood during your holiday. Unsure if you've put your own end point/ deadline into the mix but it's possible to continue IVF when you reach 42.

Can’t delay honeymoon as all paid for.
I spoke to the nurse who said she doesn’t recommend delaying treatment. I asked about side effects of injection and she said that some people experience mild symptoms like PMT.
We are only funded for IVF before I turn 42.

Unlikely seeing as it’s NHS but you could ask if there are any cancellations can yours be brought forward. Otherwise ask if there would be any issue having the injection on e.g day 20 explaining re your wedding dates.

Check too if, once you’re in the system, you can keep going until you use all your allocated rounds (assuming that where you live there are 3 since you said you could only fit in 2 - is that due to logistics and clinic policy as plenty of people do back to back rounds?)

It would be best to speak to a nurse at your clinic to see why they suggest. Even if they won’t make any adjustments at least you know where you stand and can plan what course of action you want to take.

Regarding injections and so forth on your wedding day and honey moon, it is doable, sometimes the side effects are only minor so you could get away with it and having your first injection on the wedding day, you can do this before your day begins. . Its just the bleeding. You might have to forgo intimate time with your husband and obviously worry about a period on the honey moon. You could make this up by going away for the weekend somewhere local once the period is finished. I dont know what other options you would have, delaying treatment may mean you miss out on further treatment or delaying the honeymoon and wedding means you miss out on Monday. Is honestly find away to make them both work now that its all happening at once. It sucks. I was pregnant at my wedding and on my honey moon, I was 4 months pregnant and had HG, I looked rough for my wedding and struggled to enjoy my honey moon, I was so crook but my husband and I being geniuses we were decided to do ivf before the wedding thinking it would take us a long time as we heard all the stories but it took or first round and first transfer and it was too close to the wedding and our honey moon that we couldnt postpone anything so I spent my wedding day and honey moon vomiting minute, I didn't get to try my cake and eat the the food or try the wine lol

Thanks for your replies. The nurse did say I could get the injection on day 20 so it might just work out timings.
It’s the unknown I’m worried about. The thought that kept me awake last night was, “What if I start bleeding on my wedding day in my white dress and don’t notice straight away?!”
Clinic policy is no transfer after turning 42. Does each round take 2 months? If first round fails, do I wait for following period to try again or is there a gap?

Im not sure about your clinic but our clinic allow for back to back treatment as long as everything is working normal, so to speak. I had a failed cycle in april and was ready to go again in may but I unfortunately had a cancelled cycle.

sirensong · 21/06/2025 22:51

@SayIt24 does that transfer policy also extend to previously frozen embryos? If so, bizarre.
