Recent info on NHS Guys and South East London IVF?

Hello all,
I’ve been referred for IVF at Guys and was told by my GP I’d need a BMI of 25 (currently 26- so dieting!).
However, the South East London guidelines it says you need a BMI between 19 and 30- as does most NHS information….

Does anyone understand why?

I do understand that a BMI between 25-30 is overweight, but am confused as to why officially NHS say they BMI cut off is 30 and I’ve been told 25?

Fertility issues stemming from endometriosis and PCOS.

Also- would be great to hear if anyone has had recent experience at Guys- how long things take get going after consultant appt if approved for IVF etc?

Thank you in advance and best wishes to everyone experiencing similar struggles

@ConfusedAnroid could it be your GP saying that, as opposed to its a Guys policy? I'm doing IVF privately now but went to King's for a BMI check to kick start the process there and they wanted it between 19 and 30. It would be quite weird for another hospital in almost the same area having quite a different policy!

Thank you for replying @Orangewillow
Yes, Guys and Kings are part of the same commissioning group / London NHS region so it should be the same?!

Maybe you’re right and it’s my GP saying it- I still find it confusing though! Maybe I’ll call them and ask. I am dieting but have been getting stressed I won’t lose enough weight quickly enough, which seems silly if my BMI will actually be comfortably within Guy’s range! Confused

Good luck with your journey. Can I ask why you ended up going private or is that too personal to ask?

GPs are often bullshitters. They may just be assuming it needs to be under 25 - but granted that is the case in some UK areas. Go by the official policy of your local care board.

If it does end up being 25, just stand tall when they measure you or slap half an inch on if self reporting.

Thank you @sirensong. I hadn’t thought of that!

@ConfusedAnroid yep I'd second @sirensong that the GP might not actually know and have just said 25. I found my GPs pretty unhelpful/lacking in fertility knowledge! Hopefully you can easily contact Guys to confirm and then if it is up to 30, take that worry off your plate!

Thank you, yeah no problem I'm happy to share - I spoke to Kings about IVF either private or NHS and they said they thought I'd have to have been TTC for 2 years to qualify for NHS, at that point it had been 18 months and I didn't want to wait, amd rhen I never heard back about it. Also wanted to get embryos PGTA tested which the NHS doesnt do. We'd already been at the Lister for immunology testing and liked our consultant so decided to stay there as we would be paying anyway!

Thank you @Orangewillow! I will contact Guys.

Thank you for sharing your experience too. I hope everything goes well for you at the Lister.
