Question about sedation

Keep hearing about sedation for the egg retrieval, but my consultant said I’ll be asleep. I’m confused, as I thought with sedation you were awake but relaxed?

I had 'deep sedation' which knocked me out completely. It might vary between clinics whether they do this or you're awake but most people I've heard said they were asleep for it

same as PP, I had deep sedation and was completely asleep. I’ve had a general anaesthetic before for surgery and honestly I couldn’t tell the difference.

Same here, deep sedation - I went to “sleep” in the theatre & woke up in a cubicle with absolutely to memory of the procedure or how I got there! 😁

I fell asleep. However, it is still a sedation and not an anaesthetic. You could be roused/reversed immediately as most IVF clinics do not have license to fully anaesthetise you.

For my egg retrieval I had sedation. I was completely asleep. The main difference between sedation and general anesthesia is that you breathe on your own, there’s no tube down your throat with sedation. I woke up much faster than with general and felt good afterwards, not groggy or out of it. To be honest I didn’t even feel very sore like I was expecting. The most uncomfortable part was the ovaries feeling like footballs before the surgery. Please don’t worry about the retrieval, the Google searches I did and hearing what they’ll do in the procedure was way worse than the actual thing. Best of luck x

I have been wondering about this too. My clinic use 'conscious sedation' and when I asked what this meant they just said I would be given a pain killer to take before then the conscious sedation would make me relaxed and not feel much but also that some people dose off and don't remember anything. Has anyone had conscious sedation before? And if so how was it?

Ok, it sounds like I misunderstood then, as I thought sedation meant I’d be awake but just very relaxed. Thanks for clarifying and for reassurance, it’s all a bit scary.
