FET or New cycle

Hi All,

I currently have 1 embryo left in storage and I'm trying decide between doing a FET or starting a new IVF cycle. Doing a FET seems like an obvious choice but I'm worried about if this doesn't work we would have to start a fresh cycle anyway incurring more costs. Also to do a FET I would have to transfer my embryo to a new clinic as I'm not too happy with the clinic I used in the past (although we were successful on our 3rd transfer with them).

I'm not sure if I should risk it with our last embryo or just start fresh. Any advice is welcome x

hi, I was in a similar situation in that we had 1 embryo left out of 3 (first early miscarriage, second negative), and I asked our consultant for advice. He suggested I get my AMH tested again as if it had dropped dramatically (all embryos were frozen 3 years ago), it would be best to do a fresh cycle first. It hadn’t so we decided to do an FET rather than doing the whole thing again, and luckily it worked. I am 38 so I didn’t want to wait about if we did need to do a fresh cycle. Hope that helps.

@Frenchie86 thank you so much for taking the time to reply, that was super helpful and I will ask my new clinic for an AMH test. My embryos were also frozen 3 (almost 4) years ago x

Hi, similar to above I think it depends on your age and AMH. If you’re young with a good reserve then you could go for FET knowing you still have time to get more embryos if it doesn’t work. If times not on your side I’d go down the fresh route and keep the 1 embryo in the bank as back up.

Thank you @Zypig definitely going to get my AMH retested to see where I stand and make my decision based on this x

Quick update AMH has been tested and has declined at all so still have time on my side. However I have two hesitations about doing a FET, firstly I would have to transfer my embryo from one clinic to another which is proving quite costly. Secondly my last remaining embryo is considered 'poor' as it is graded a 4BC. So now I'm facing the dilemma of investing in a FET for a 'poor' embryo or just go straight for a fresh cycle.

I know there's no right or wrong answer but I would be grateful for any advice.

TIA x

Hi OP, it’s quite hard to judge without more information, do you mind saying what your AMH is, how old you are and (in an ideal world) whether you want one more child or more?

RiceKrispies90 · 13/12/2024 21:58

Hi @Zypig thanks for taking the time to respond. AMH is 22 and I'm 34. In an ideal world I would love more children but realistically speaking I would be happy with just 1 more x

Hi, that’s a decent AMH which is helpful, but personally I’d go for a new fresh round given how the stats change for over 35 years and by the time you’ve faffed around moving the embryo taking time and money as well. With that AMH you stand a good chance of getting a few more in the bank while you are still relatively young, which can really take the pressure off psychologically. Good luck with whatever you chose!

Thank you @Zypig definitely some food for thought x
