PCOS & Metformin

Hi,

I'm wondering if anyone can help...I've had PCOS for over 10 years now. I luckily have a child who I had before I was 25. But since my 30's I've struggled. I've had numerous miscarriages, my B12 is always low, my folic acid is always low (I now get B12 injections every 3 months and the doctor has finally re-prescribed me folic acid). They think my really low folic acid was the reason behind my last miscarriage.

I also take Myo-inositol.

I have also put a stone on since last year, maybe a bit more actually... I'm trying to shift it as I am generally more symptomatic with my PCOS when I gain weight. However, my hectic life style has been making it hard. I went to my GP to basically beg for help.

He's put me on metformin 500mg 2x a day. I've had no issues with it at all. And I've lost 7lb because my appetite has done a complete U turn, so I am taking advantage of this by now switching up my diet and trying to move more.

I just wondered if anyone else is on metformin for PCOS, have you managed to have a baby on it? How long did it take to start making positive effects on your cycle?

I'm due on a period soon but I feel like I've had no symptoms around ovulation and I have no symptoms pre-period which I normal done.... my body is just 'silent'... I don't know if this is a good thing or bad thing. Normally I can feel anything and everything.

I'm hoping the metformin isn't doing more harm than good.

The only good thing to come from it is now I don't have cravings or the NEED for crap etc. I feel like i function normally now my insulin resistance is being controlled by these tablets.

But I am still worried about my hormones, cycle and being able to have another child because I would like to complete my family.

Hey there. I was on metformin for about 2 years. In the long run sadly it didn't regulate my cycles. I also did ovulation induction, which did make me ovulate but not in a timely manner. I was still having 50+ days cycles and not getting pregnant.
I did manage to get pregnant ( by some miracle) in 2023 just before we started clomid but miscarried early.
I lost alot of weight and I think that was key to kick starting my body last year. I went from hardly having periods to bang on every month. Sadly still didn't get pregnant tho even tho i was ovulating naturally and ended up going through ivf last year.
I think everyone's experience with metformin is different. It helps some and not others . I think you'll not know until your on it a few months.
Personally, metformin just didn't agree with my body. I suffered terrible side effects.
I think it's positive tho that you were able to conceive a child naturally and are clearly able to get pregnant. Have you been referred to the recurrent mc clinic?

@VioIetMoon Thank you for replying to me. I think sticking with my weight loss too is going to be really helpful. I think the doc is gonna review me after 6 months. And nope I haven’t been referred anywhere. But I was thinking maybe I’ll be monitored if I get pregnant at some point in the future.

I guess in 6 months too I’ll know better if my cycles are changing. They’re like 35/37/39 atm.

I’ll see what happens at the 6 months mark and if there’s not much change I think I might just stop them and continue as I am eating better and moving my body.

A consultant told me that they prefer inositol over metformin
