Confused about HyCoSy or Saline Scan? Early IVF testing

I am in the process of going through to consultation and testing for IVF in a few months. My consultant has requested that I do either a Saline Infusion scan by itself, or add on the HyCoSy. I am a bit confused by which to go for, and wondering if anyone has been in the same position. I had an ectopic pregnancy a few months ago and lost my right fallopian tube, so would be interested in the HyCoSy, but the dr said it might be unnecessary if we're going IVF.

"The Saline Sonogram scan is a scan that utilises Saline solution, in conjunction with the scan to look at the uterine cavity in particular and the endometrium. The HyCoSy scan utilises a contrast medium which allows the consultant to confirm whether there may be any blockage in the fallopian tubes. Dr has confirmed that he definitely thinks that the 3D Saline is necessary but you do also have the option of also doing a HyCoSy scan in this same appointment. However he has indicated that if you are planning on doing IVF, the HyCoSy wouldn’t necessarily be required."- their email, in case it's helpful.

Many thanks in advance

Hi, so sorry to hear about your ectopic. I had a saline scan recently. It gives a better view of the uterus compared to an internal scan.

HyCoSy checks if the fallopian tubes are blocked. Even if your remaining tube is blocked, it won't affect IVF outcome as the eggs will be retrieved by the doctor and fertilised in the lab.

I guess you don't need HyCoSy for IVF, but you can check it out if you also want to keep trying naturally in between the IVF cycles (should you need more than one cycle). At least you can rule out blocked tube as a cause for infertility.

Another thing is the additional cost. But it might also be cheaper to do both at the same time than doing them separately.

Whatever you decide, good luck 🍀
