Difficult FET

Difficult FET..

had my second FET yesterday, first failed due to what the clinic put down to a difficult transfer as everything else looked pretty perfect. We were advised to book in for a hysteroscopy & dilation however consultant said because we have a high number of embryos left (12 after first failed FET, 6 A grade) that she would be ok with us having another go while we wait. That was yesterday but the transfer was possibly even worse than the first! Have a tilted uterus so the dr found it difficult to get the catheter through, had to call a more senior dr after around 20 mins of trying. Eventually got through but again had bleeding after & can’t help but think I’m already out. Has anyone had an experience like this and ended up with BFP? Looking for hope!

I had my second FET in June, and I’m currently 6 and a half weeks pregnant - had a scan today and all is looking good.

On my first transfer that failed, it was very straightforward but I got a BFN on my official test date. This time around, the transfer took much longer - nearly an hour. They had real problems trying to get it into the right place, and at one point I had six members of staff in the room assisting in one way or another. Eventually they were happy with the positioning and did the transfer but it was very difficult trying to get the catheter in the right place.

I actually looked at it slightly differently that I was really glad they took so much time, and made sure it was right, even though it was very stressful. I wonder if that was the reason the second transfer worked and if the first consultant in my failed transfer hadn’t been quite so careful with getting the exact right positioning - but who knows? It could have just been one of those things.

Either way, I really don’t think it’s a bad sign in any way that it took that long or that it will affect your result overall. I think bleeding afterwards is very common too and won’t affect the outcome.

Wishing you so much good luck.

I’m having to be sedated for my FET because of difficulties with scarring on my cervix. It’s not something they normally do but it will make it easier for me as I won’t be uncomfortable. They had a practise catheter test before my egg retrieval and that proved difficult but managed to get 13 eggs with me sedated.

Got to wait until next month until I know when my transfer is though. I’ll be thinking of you @Mfiwife xx

Hi both. Thanks so much for your messages!

@Always28 congratulations on your pregnancy! I was told at my first transfer that bleeding will just be from my cervix and not to worry but in my follow up consultation we were told they think that’s why it failed so it’s so hard to know what to believe! All the info seems so conflicting. Did you do a medicated or natural transfer? & what symptoms did you have in the 2ww?

@SlinkMcSlink that’s interesting I would have much preferred being sedated, I found it so painful the second time. Glad you were able to get 13 eggs, good luck for your transfer xx

It was a medicated cycle. I didn’t have lots of symptoms really - I had a few cramps, and I had sore boobs, but the progesterone can cause the sore boobs anyway so I didn’t feel like that told me much either way. I did have a little bit of spotting at 11dpt, which I think was probably from implantation making its way out.

@Mfiwife i had very similar experiences. My first fresh transfer was done by the top consultant and went fine but every time they kept asking if I had surgery before which I didn't understand. I had positive tests until 7 weeks when I miscarried.

The next FET didn't go well and took an hour and a half. It was then that I was told that my cervix was really tight. I thought bs since the first went to plan.

I then had anotjer fresh cycle and it took about 30 minutes. Yet again they said I needed dilation. My issue was they struggled to get the thin catheter in then once it was in I had a bend that was almost 90 degrees up so they constantly prodded to get it in.

I had the dilation but with a hysteroscopy as I wanted them to look at the uterus itself (I was diagnosed unexplained infertility). They said that it was tough to dilate but otherwise everything looked fine but they cleaned out the lining like a scratch.

So I went for my FET only to have more issues!!! She kept prodding at the same angled bit. I could see on the ultrasound that it was wider but she couldn't get it in without the consultant again. I was a wreck as I had tried so many times and waited so long for the surgery to have it make no difference. I was convinced it ruined the transfer. But I am now just over 16 weeks pregnant with a, so far, healthy baby girl. I believe the hysteroscopy made the difference to me. I also did a natural cycle so no drugs other than the progesterone.

Keep me posted on how your transfer goes and I would definitely recommend the surgery. It's not pleasant by any means as much worse than ivf pain wise. Hopefully you don't need it and it is good that you can still have the transfers while you wait (I wasn't allowed so it was 9m of nothing which was heartbreaking for me).

Thanks so much for your response @Reddy01 congratulations on your pregnancy!! Sounds like you really went through it with hysterectomy etc. really praying I don’t have to have it. I am 6dp5dt today & have a faint BFP! Feeling excited but also cautious as it’s so early & my Otd isn’t until a week today (13p5dt). It’s made me feel better though that the trf has technically worked and if something happens now it’s likely due to an issue with the embryo rather than a difficult transfer! Bet it feels so amazing to be 16 weeks!
