HSG TESTS

Me and my partner have been trying for a baby since 2020, we went to the GP which they referred him for his semen test which came back absolutely fine! I have confirmed PCSO, and we got referred to the hospital, we had our first appointment with our consultant today and he's requesting ovulation bloods on the 21st day wait to see the results of them and then he's suggesting a HSG weather im ovulating or not and he couldn't start medication until the HSG was done but because of delays in the hospital he said it could be a while before it was done, he suggested going private for the HSG but some say you need a referral which he said he won't give but he's the one suggesting it? And basically said if my tubes are blocked our only option is ivf does this sound right? Surely if I have the blood test on the 21st day and I'm not ovulating surely he could give medication to help? Can someone help please? What kind of options do you think we should have? Should we look into IVF?

Hi @CoolFawn . I will have Hycosy done this week which I think is very similar to hsg it’s just that mine will be done via ultrasound and hsg is done via xray? You can get it done privately without referral I think? It’s very odd the dr won’t provide any. I’m not sure about hsg but hycosy is around 400-500£ in London. Before referring us to the fertility clinic (NHS), I had FSH and progesterone blood test at the GP clinic. Also had a swab for chlamydia i think. And sperm test for my hubby. At the fertility clinic, i had AMH blood test which sadly came back as very low. This meant we were disqualified from NHS funded IVF.

I think you can get a surgery to remove fallopian tube blockage depending on the severity? I’m hoping my tubes are all ok as we’re planning to try naturally (apparently can boost your chances a little bit post procedure) for 2-3 mos before going down the IVF route which we will now need to fund privately.

Good luck with all the tests and investigations x

HSG is a tubal x ray and is quite a useful test to have done. It can show deformities inside the tubes which is not accessible by other methods. It should not hurt provided the dye is injected both slowly and carefully. The consultant has been sensible re suggesting that you having the HSG done as a private patient because wait lists/times for gynaecology on the NHS are miles long.

PCOS and IVF are uneasy bedfellows and this should not be attempted until and unless all other treatment options have failed.
