All 3 embryos arrested on day 3

Hi all,

I am really disappointed today as I heard all my 3 embryos arrested on day 3. I have never had this before as I have always had a top quality embryo and a good to fair quality embryo on all the 3 cycles. I had an early miscarriage following my recent fresh transfer so decided to change country for my 4th retrieval cycle. The embryologist said that the endoplastic reticulum was at the centre of my oocytes which may have stopped them from diving which wasn’t really convincing to me and all 3 embryos being arrested on the same day sounds so unlikely. I know I am not an expert but I am so disappointed that I am starting to think if something went wrong during ICSI or in the culture. My husband had sperm retrieved using TESA so I am so surprised that they didn’t go past day 3. Has anyone came across such a thing?

Hi - didn’t want to read and run. Really sorry you had this happen, it must have been awful. Are you able to speak to the embryologist about other things that could be wrong? It was my understanding it’s down to the egg on the first 3 days and then sperm takes over - but I’m not the expert like them so it’s definitely something to ask them. Did they give a reason as to why your eggs might have the reticulum in the wrong place and whether there is anything you can do to fix that issue?

Have you had a DNA fragmentation test? I believe if embryos arrest at day 3 is the sperm problem and could also be the cause of that early MC. Did you get them tested?

Thanks @HopefulllHolly @Olivie12 I was so shocked and upset so couldn’t even ask questions the day when I heard the news. I have my next appointment in a couple of days so will ask them then. @Olivie12 My husband had mild fragmentation which they said is not a problem but we still chose to do TESA so they surgically removed the sperms which helps combat the fragmentation issue. As we have always had a top quality embryo on all of our previous cycles we were quite confident this time but alas. Hopefully my next cycle would yield better results. Many thanks for taking the time to reply both of you, much appreciate it.

@Olivie12 I didn’t do genetic testing in any of my previous cycles but were planning to do this time.

@Wanttobemamma yes, unfortunately you have many variables without PGT testing. The only time when we had to do TESA it was worse for us.

Even top quality embryos don't pass PGT, but once you know, you can make a path forward. They said it takes 3 PGT embryos for a live birth.

@Olivie12 Thank you, starting next cycle now. I hope this one yields some embryos. I hope you had a positive outcome. I will be getting the embryos tested this time.
