Levothyroxine and irregular cycles

Hi all, feeling incredibly fed up. As of today we’re on our 14 month of trying, with one MMC at 12 weeks to show for it last summer.

Following MMC I had bloods done as felt rubbish, borderline underactive thyroid was found and after six months of begging my GP he put me on a low dose of levothyroxine which has brought my TSH down from 4.1 to 1.6 which is great.

However since I’ve started my cycles have gone from extremely regular, ovulated on the same cycle day each month, cycles were always 30-31 days. Now ovulation is about much earlier, and my cycles are all over the place, the latest being just 25 days with a 11 day luteal phase.

I feel like I’ve cracked one issue, my thyroid, but in doing so caused a whole new issue. Has anyone experienced this when starting levothyroxine?

Hi - I was diagnosed with Hashimotos few years back and I’m on Levothyroxine. It’s quite common that hypothyroidism causes irregular cycles - they usually want the TSH <2 for a healthy pregnancy. My levels are still swinging from one extreme to the other so im monitored by the endocrine team as I’ve started IVF, but don’t worry once your level is stable you will feel so much better in yourself

my cycles range from 30-60 days when my thyroid level is not in range !

! Just a note to mention try not to mix different brands of your Levothyroxine as it can affect the effacy of the drug ! - once your level is stable your cycles should get back to regular, if not then you can try taking the pill to regulate it yourself! The levothyroxine usually takes a few weeks when you first start it to work make sure your GP is keeping an eye on your levels by doing doing bloods every few weeks - and especially when your pregnant they need to check at least every trimester to keep the level below 2 xxxx
