HyCosy - what to expect?

Hi

I have a HyCosy booked in two weeks time.

I’ve had a look on the NHS website and have spoken with my doctor but I would like to hear some real life experience to help me prepare myself for what to expect.

If you have had one and can explain or describe what happened then I’d appreciate it - good or bad!

Thanks

I can't remember mine that well but the set up is like for a smear test. I didn't find the procedure itself that uncomfortable but had some intense cramping for a few hours after - manageable but sore. I also felt quite lightheaded for a short while afterwards, again very common. Take some paracetamol just before would be my suggestion. Hope all goes well.

Mine was just like a smear test but much more comfortable!! The nurses were fab, warmed up the equipment in their hands (they wore gloves!) and one nurse held my hand the entire time & they just chatted away to make me feel comfortable, they even had music on in the background!

i had some mini cramps (they clamp the cervix) but i felt the speculum more! Just like a normal smear test. I remember it felt weird when they did the actual procedure but just unusual, it didn’t hurt.
they gave me a huge sanitary pad to wear after which was actually really comfy! 😅
I had cramps after like a period pain, for a few hours. I took paracetamol an hour before the procedure so I think that helped maybe 🤔

good luck with yours … you’ll be totally fine!!

I had one in November. It was explained to me it would feel like a smear test and that was accurate. It wasn’t painful and I didn’t have any cramps afterwards.

Thanks so much, this is all really helpful (and actually very reassuring as well!)

Hello, I had one, there was a big team of supportive nurses etc. the procedure was uncomfortable but not painful. They ask you to sit there for a bit after to check if you have an allergic reaction.
I did have an allergic reaction but not immediately, mine started a day after. I’ve had one previously from contrast medium used in scans). Unfortunately I ended up with my face swelling and all over itching skin rash for a week which wouldn’t go away with usual antihistamine meds, I had to take steroids. I think it’s rare though and mostly uncomfortable.

I had mine this afternoon. It was a bit painful and uncomfortable and it took a couple goes to get the catheter in but it wasn't unbearable and it was over pretty quickly. The doctor showed me on the ultrasound that my tubes were clear and said I had lots of follicles. I was then just told I would have a telephone consultation and that was it. I was also given some antibiotics to ensure no infection (which I'm told is very low risk so just as a precaution).

No closer to understanding why it's been 4 years of unexplained infertility 🙃. The doc did say it can improve fertility after though so who knows..
