Thyroid - who can help?

Just wondering if anyone can offer any advice, me and my partner have been trying for 12 months now with one miscarriage at 12 weeks last year. Within the last 6 months I’ve had my thyroid checked three times and my TSH levels have been 4.1, 3.0 and now 3.5. Two years ago it was 1.8. All other results including T4 and progesterone are perfect.

I live a really active and healthy lifestyle, and since my original appointment where the 4.1 result was found I’ve incorporated more thyroid friendly food into my diet but clearly this has had no impact.

The irony is I feel miles better than I did two years ago when my TSH was 1.8. My GP is not interested as levels are within normal range, despite knowing we’re trying for a baby. I appreciate they have more important things to concentrate on but I’m just at a loss on who can help me now. I’m willing to pay but I’m not sure who it would be I’d need to see or where to start just for some help with one specific problem?

What is it you're wanting if your levels are in normal range? Sorry, I don't really understand what you're worried about. It's normal for TSH to fluctuate. I'm sorry for your loss last year. Is your GP open to doing a fertility clinic referral? It is very frustrating but it can be normal for it to take 12 months or longer for some, and whilst very sad you miscarried, it is positive you've conceived in that time. Wishing you luck,

A fertility clinic may prescribe medication, but you’d likely have to sign up to their initial tests, and even then, they may not feel it necessary as it’s within range, even if it’s above the ideal for TTC.

Also, TSH varies wildly (easily 1–1.5) through the day as well as over time, so those numbers may not be indicative of your overall thyroid levels.

Mine was 4.1 and the gp put me on 50mcgs levothyroxine specifically because I said I'm trying to conceive. I ended up needing ivf due to male factor infertility so not me, but I needed my tsh to be below 2 to do the cycle. You should ask your gp to reconsider.

Hi Marm2024, thyroid tsh levels should be under 2.5 for ttc and pregnancy.

My tsh level fluctuates with all other thyroid levels normal and GP wouldn't take any action, so I went to a private gynecologist consultant with test results. They contacted GP via letter to state guidance to treat with thyroxine and monitor every 4-6 weeks. Definitely get checked out with a consultant and they can tell your GP the levels and guidance for treatment.
